The Great Sphinx is a huge, amazing, ginormous, lion type,

statue. The face of the Sphinx is believed to represent the face
of Pharaoh Khafre. It is the greatest monumental sculpture in
the ancient world. The Great Sphinx is made of a single,
enormous piece of limestone, which is 240 feet long, and 66
feet high. The Great Sphinx sits in the shadow of the pyramid
of the Pharaoh Khafre. The Great Sphinx also was built in about
sometime between 2575 2467 BC. It was probably mainly
built to keep away robbers from the Pharaoh Khafres tomb. It
was built painted red by King Khufu, father of Pharaoh Khafre.
The great sphinx nose is missing because it is believed to
have been shot off by a cannon ball, or to be chiseled off by
some robbers. The most likely reason the nose is missing is
probably because it was chiseled of by a robber named Sufi,
considering it was a blasphemous idol, in around 800 AD.
Unfortunately, we dont have very much record of the history of
The Great Sphinx, and I wish we had more. The nose was
definitely removed by man, because there is dent marks in the
spot where the nose should be. The nose shouldve been held

by metal rods to keep it in, but they didnt know what would
happen to the nose, so thats probably why they didnt.
The Great Sphinx beard wasnt put on for about 1,000 years
after it was built. The Great sphinx beard was not put on,
because when they were building it, the builders realized that
their architecture didnt work. About 1,000 years later, a group
of people realized the beard was missing, and built a new one.
Little did they know, because the architecture of the Sphinx,
the beard would fall off, and be taken away. Today part of that
beard is in a British museum called The British Museum. If
the beard was still on the Sphinx today, we might have not had
the whole calamity with the nose.
So, as you can see, The Great Sphinx is a mighty statue, and
has had a lot happen to it. It is amazing that it is still standing
though.
