San Bernardino, Calif. was awoken around 8 a.m. today by the alarming and frightening sounds of an explosion. We were sitting at the table and we heard this loud noise, Bill Stewart, insurance agent, recalls what he felt this morning during the explosion, and it just started getting bigger. I ran to the window and looked out and could see nothing but smoke; then we both hit the floor. Authorities are not completely sure about the cause of the pipeline explosion. This neighborhood had previously suffered from a 69-car runaway freight train derailment two weeks prior. The pipeline, which is buried six feet underground, carries unleaded fuel from Colton to Nevada. It sprayed fuel on the houses when it ruptured. David Andries, an official of the Calnev gas company explains, We dont know the cause of the break. It could have been the train, obviously, he says. This statement brings suspicion when San Bernardino City Attorney, Jim Penman says, We were assured by the pipeline people it was safe (after the railroad accident) and the experts who examined it said there was no danger. Community members do not feel safe after the railroad derailment. Miretta Brumlow said she had not attended school since the railroad disaster because she was afraid to leave her children at home. Thank God I didnt go to my class at eight oclock this morning. Two people have died in a home on Duffy Street. One body was burned beyond recognition. Paul Allaire, San Bernardino Fire Department spokesman gave us an update about the number of deaths and injuries, The other victim is believed to be a man. Firefighters are looking for a third victim in the home. Hospital officials also give information about the number of deaths and injuries, Seven burn victims and two victims treated for smoke inhalation. Though the cause of the explosion is still being investigated, the impact the pipeline explosion has left on the community is devastating.
