MDJ: David Cook. Live in the Studio and it's a media frenzy.

David: Hello.

FDJ: David Cook, what the hell? Can you believe this? What were you doing a year ago?

David: Ahh...I was livin' in Tulsa, bartending and playin' shows to 5..6 people.

FDJ: Where were you livin'?

David: Ahh..just...uh..

FDJ: A little bitty apartment?

David: No, actually I lucked out. I had a buddy with a house. He let me crash. It was nice,
you know?

MDJ: Before we go any further you have to say Happy Mother's Day to your mama.

David: Absolutely! To my mother... Beth Foraker, Happy Mother's Day.

FDJ: She is so proud.

David: Awww...she's amazing.

MDJ: Is she comin' down?

David: I'm actually gonna meet up with her later.Yeah.

MDJ: Good, good. You know we started talking to her about oh I don't know, 14 weeks
ago. It was right after you did the "Hello" by Lionel Richie and uh....

FDJ: And we knew that day, as did all the judges, that you would be the next American
Idol. And it's gonna happen.

[You can hear fans cheering/screaming in the background]

MDJ: Is this the way it's been everywhere?

David: They need to fill in this top half of the window then it would just look crazy.
What's up guys?
FDJ: Hey David. Did you actually watch American Idol before you made it to American
Idol yourself?

David: Uhmm.. Very residually. My...my little brother was actually more of a fan. So I
kind of got some knowledge imparted by him to me. But you know, I think the show is an
amazing, amazing avenue for people who just want to be themselves and be musicians
and be singers.

FDJ: Take a beatin'.

David: Yeah, you know it's part of the fun.

MDJ: David Cook's in studio with us, the American Idol. Hes got the big assembly today
out at Blue Springs of course where you went to high school, Blue Springs South.

FDJ: And we talked about that this morning too. There's always, when you go back to
your high school, like we do, there are 3 or 4 teachers that made a difference. They were
inspirational teachers. And then there were 3 or 4 that were total jerks. So is it going to
feel good to see a coach that wasn't so nice or a lady that didn't treat you too good?

David: I'll tell you what, I.. I.. I've gotta be completely honest, my experience in High
School was amazing. Like the support staff , the support staff growing up was just
amazing.

MDJ: And I heard you were a heck of a football player.

David: Oh well you know uh.....

MDJ: Someone told me you were on the football team, c'mon.

David: I uh I don't wanna....

FDY: What were you the water boy? Were you the water boy? c'mon.

MDJ: No, he was the wide receiver, right?

David: Well you know uh, I uh, I don't... I don't wanna brag or anything, but if music
hadn't intervened, maybe...maybe, I'm Randy Moss. Who knows? I have no idea.

MDJ: [laughing] Ooooh, I love it.

FDJ: [laughing] He's always goin' for the big ones... the big ones.

MDJ: David Cook is in studio with us. David I gotta ask ya, I've always wondered this.
At what point during the competion do the idols finally start going into negotiations with
people like Clive Davis and other records execs? I mean is it top 4 top 6 top 8 when you
guys can finally just go (sigh of relief)? Like Carly you know I was depressed when
Carly got voted off.
.
David: As was I.

MDJ: Because I thought she is an incredible talent. And I mean once you do get into the
top 6 or 8 are you pretty much a lock to get a record deal?

David: Well, this is where it gets interesting, and I think there's a little bit of a
misperception about the show. The show is a launching pad for careers. That's what it is.
It's not a career. And uh, the most important thing you can do is what you do after Idol.
And so, there are no gaurantees, and especially in the music industry. So I don't know
how it pans out. I hope I get to put out a record.

FDJ: Oh, come on.....

MDJ: Listen to you... You've already got... Lionel Richie said he wants you to do "Hello"
already, c'mon.

David: Let's do it!

FDJ: Out of all the celebrities you've worked with so far, which do you think made the
most difference, helped you the most and which one was the most fun? Was Dolly Parton
just as sweet as she seems?

David: All the mentors were absolutely so sweet and gracious. but if one stood out,
uh....Andrew Lloyd Webber was fantastic. And...and...and I'll be honest he... him and I
just, we...we had something that clicked. Like he just got it wasn't about hitting all the
right notes, 'cause those songs are ridiculously hard. It's just about finding the right vibe,
the right emotion for that song. That's what Andrew Lloyd Webber is all about and I
loved it.

FDJ: Well he writes emotion.

David: Oh yeah, absolutely.

MDJ: David Cook's in studio with us. And you guys have had some hard mentors this
year but you've always...the one thing that everybody knows about you and the thing that
Simon and Randy and Paula always keep commenting on is that each song that you do
you take and put your own twist on. Are you getting a lot help with that? Because I know
that your a musician at heart and you're doing a lot of writing yourself. How much do
they help you out with the rewrites?

David: Uhmm, they give us a great team of uhm like, vocal coaches and arrangers to try
to help us, but it's on us. It's our ideas. It's just a matter of how we communicate 'em. And
so, yeah with the exception of when I do a cover of a cover, I mean, you know it's me.

FDJ: Yeah, and I talked to my buddies in REO Speedwagon. I'm real close to them
they're good friends of mine.

MDJ: She's gonna marry Kevin Cronin.

FDJ: He's married well, but he was having some problems so you don't know. Maybe.
Who knows what'll happen. No, but what I'm sayin', they're really excited about you
being in town. Any chance you might make it up on stage with REO tonight with a
guitar?

David: I, I don't know about a guitar, but I would love to go to that show tonight, so...

FDJ: Well, they're askin' me to ask you.

David: [to someone else in the studio] Lets uh.. can we make it happen? You know, I'll
tell you what. If time permits, and I'm not just dog tired, I'm down for it.

MDJ: There ya go.

FDJ: Right on! REO American Idol night tonight.

MDJ: Well, David best of luck to ya. I know it's down to the final 3. I told your mom 6
weeks ago I thought it was going to come down to the David and David show.

David: Oh man, I hope it pans out. We'll see what happens.

MDJ: Maybe they'll have you guys do some Boomtown Rats or something.
(David's laughing)

FDJ: No, I want some REO. Give me some REO.

David: Well, ya know we'll see what happens.

MDJ: It'll be fun. David you are an amazing talent, your mom is an amazing person.

FDJ: Wonderful. Good kid too.

David: Thank you.

MDJ: We are so proud of you. Everybody here in Kansas City, lovin' David Cook right
now.

FDJ: What are you giving your mom for Mothers Day?
David: Ha, ha... I'll never tell.

DJ: Ha,ha you're givin' her your love. That's what you're givin' her.

David: That's right.

MDJ: Here's all you gotta do before you leave just give us some kind of spontaneous
David Cook, Moffett and Frankie 101 the Fox ID.

(David in an appropriate radio voice)

David: Hey guys, this is Moffett and Frankie on 101 the Fox.

MDJ: Yeah, and our buddy David Cook. I love it. David enjoy your stay in town I know
it's gonna be a short one. Good luck. Everybody's gonna be voting for ya next week.
Dude you are the next American Idol.

David: Thank you so much guys. Thank you.

MDJ: I love it, I love it man.
