FlexiTrunk Microwave
A new generation radio for trunk
applications

Nokia Siemens Networks FlexiTrunk Microwave is a digital microwave

communication system based on SDH and IP specifications, tailored for smooth,
carrier-by-carrier, SW definable migration from legacy SDH networks to Hybrid
SDH/IP and to All-IP target scenario without HW change, and conforming to
international communications standards such as ITU-T, ITU-R and ETSI. The
system can support the full range of radio frequency bands recommended by
ITU-R (4G, 5G, L6G, U6G, 7G, 8G, 11G, 13G) and frequency spacing of 28 MHz,
29 MHz, 29.65 MHz, 30 MHz, 40 MHz and 56-58-59.3-60 MHz.
High compactness and flexibility make
FlexiTrunk Microwave the right choice
for high capacity telecommunication
scenarios where quick deployment,
fast rollout with high reliability are a
must.

System Overview

Nokia Siemens Networks FlexiTrunk

Microwave system processes native
TDM and native IP signals transporting
them over the air without any type of
ETHoverTDM nor TDMoverETH
mapping.
The same HW transceiver can be
selected by SW as native TDM or
native IP device, and applies flexible
QAM technology (4QAM to 256QAM
with adaptive modulation) with LDPC
coding to get best throughput and
optimum performances and efficiency.
The system supports, with same HW
transceiver SW upgradeable, both
alternated pattern and co-channel
operation with XPIC equalization, thus
doubling spectrum efficiency,
eventually with Space Diversity.
ACAP, ACCP and CCDP channeling
schemes are supported at all bands.

Also, power boost can be upgraded via

SW to increase TX power up to
+35dBm. 20 dB range continuous
ATPC and 1 dB step RTPC/MTPC are
available to fine-tune TX power to
minimize the power consumption down
to 80W/carrier.

Protection Schemes

N+1 Radio Protection Switching (RPS)

up to 15+1 is implemented on the radio
side using single controller card. Also
2x(N+1) configuration can be
implemented in the same Flexi-shelf,
as both 2x(N+1) single direction or
double direction (E/W repeater), using
same universal MCF/controller card.
Hitless switching with very early
warning detection and multiple
switching criteria is implemented
against propagation impairments such
as multipath fading. The RPS ensures
redundancy of the main signals,
Wayside and auxiliary signals.
Line side, (1+1) multiplex section
protection is implemented for the STM1 interface as option, while line LAG
and RSTP protection are available for
GigaEthernet interface.

System Architecture

All BB, IF, RF sections of the system

are integrated in a single compact
Flexi-shelf, housing up to 16
transceiver units in one ETSI rack
1800mm high or 2200mm high, as
preferred. Flexi-shelf is basically a
universal sub-rack configurable as
single terminal or double terminal East/
West, ACAP, ACCP or CCDP, even
supporting multi-band and cross band.
The traffic interface can be chosen
STM-1 electrical, optical (SFP module),
STM-4 or GigaEthernet (SFP module).

The GigaEthernet interface implements

a SynchE device supporting external
E1 clock, line and radio side clock
extraction, holdover and free-running
modes. The GigaEthernet interface
integrates a Layer-2 Ethernet switch
implementing carrier-grade adaptive
load balancing of data traffic over
NxRFcarriers. RSTP, LAG, QoS, VLAN
handling, QinQ and other Ethernet
features are upgradeable on the L2switch by SW license, and in full
compliance with IP/MPLS scenarios
(.1p, DSCP/DiffServ, MPLS EXP
supported).

Mixed scenario with TDM and GEth

interfaces in the same terminal is
supported, and in this case the
protection channel of the TDM section
is used as container for the GEth traffic
during normal operation, thus providing
best in class spectrum efficiency.
The system is supervised by an
SNMP/IP controller having embedded
Web LT functionality accessible via
standard HTTP browser. Each
transceiver unit includes all MODEM
functions, IF and RF parts according to
single board concept for maintenance

optimization. Wide band tunability of

the RF section (half band for 4 to 8
GHz, quarter band for 11-13 GHz
bands) allows minimal spares need
(just two units for each band from 4 to
8 GHz, 4 units for 11 GHz and for 13
GHz).
The use of plug-in RF filters allows fast
branching modification for system
expansion and/or configuration
upgrade. An expansion of capacity or
an upgrade to space diversity are easy
operations which can be properly done
without any traffic interruption by acting
on the plug-in branching filters.

Microwave Management System Nokia

Siemens Networks NetViewer supports
FlexiTrunk Microwave system. An
overall view of the complete network
structure and its ability to enter down to
the Network Element details give a
clear picture of the whole network, its
configuration and events. Fault,
Configuration and Performance
management are carried out at
Network Element level; at Network
level, Fault and Security configuration
are available.
On-click XML file is supported for
Performance management, and the
relevant information can be stored in
the NetViewer database, together with
events and alarm log.
