Structural Analysis

1. Vertical Loads
30 PSF
(20 PSF Live Load and 10 PSF Dead Load)
On the Northport Fire Station No. 2 building, the vertical loads total to 30 PSF, which includes
the live and dead loads. The roof live load is 20 PSF and the roof dead load 10 PSF. The
following flow chart explains the process of load distribution in the flat roof area of the building:

Loads bearing on PVC roof are transferred to 1 1/2" x 22 gauge type "IR" metal
decking.

Metal decking distributes load to K-series steel joists.

K-Series steel joists transfer load to a wide flange (W) stuctural steel beam member.

The W-member steel beams transfer the load to a hollow structural steel (HSS) column.

The HSS columns transfer the load to a concrete pier (Figure 1) or spread footing
(Figure 2).

In the case of a concrete pier, the load is transferred from the pier to the spread footing.

Lastly, the spread footings transfer the load to the earth. The earth reacts with the gravity load pushing
upwards. The soil has a bearing value of 2,500 PSF.

2. Lateral Loads (Wind)

General
For Northport Fire Station No. 2, there are a few methods to stabilize lateral loads. The majority
of the structural framing is stabilized by moment connections. A moment connection is a welded
beam to the columns for this project. The beam flange welds transmit full flange strength to the
column. The shear tab, welded to the column, and bolted to the beam web, supports the beam
until it is welded and offers permanent shear resistance. This connection stabilizes a frame
against lateral forces without the use of diagonal bracing or shear walls. Moment connections
stabilize the flat roof area in the central part of the building and the north metal truss area.
Structural CMU walls support lateral loads in the south end of the building. Metal trusses on the
south transfer their loads to the structural CMU walls. A CMU shear wall in the south end also
supports lateral loads in the east and west directions.
In general, lateral loads in the metal truss roof systems are transferred through the roof
diaphragm and down to CMU structural walls or steel framing members. The flat roof system
transfers the load to structural steel members and down to the earth.

This truss is a typical truss on Northport Fire Station No. 2 on the south end of the
building. The is a Triple Howe truss spanning 60. The truss has 20 PSF live Load and a
10 PSF dead load applied to it. The trusses throughout the building primarily bear on
structural steel beams. However, in this location on the south end, the trusses bear on
structural CMU walls. Overall, the trusses are braced and attached to structural steel
members or structural CMU walls.

This is a section cut of the south end of the building with a metal truss bearing on
structural CMU walls. The north wind loads acting on the structural system of the building
creates a lateral force that stresses the structural CMU walls in a horizontal direction. The
structural CMU walls deflect the concrete footings and the trusses react to limit deflection.
The wind creates an uplift force on the trusses, but the truss bracing reacts the uplift to
hold the them in place.

Structural Analysis

Temporary Truss Bracing:

Hip gable roofs require less bracing

than gables. They tend to self-brace
because of the sloping ends. Even so,
the same concepts of span and length
determine the nature and frequency of
bracing. Two spans lengths need
attention - spans up to 44 and spans
which are 44 to 54. For spans up to
44 m, diagonal bracing is only
required in the gable section between
hip gable ends. That is, between the
apex of opposing ends. Specific
bracing requirements depend on
whether the roof length (L) is longer or
shorter than the half truss span (h). In
this case the shorter scenario occurs.

*Assume ground brace to be at 45

degrees*

7.25"

There will need to be ground bracing for the trusses to keep the them
from falling over before they are permanently braced. The ground
bracing system will use multiple sizes of 2x lumber. The bracing
system will have vertical member that runs up to the top of the truss
where it meets a lateral member that runs on top of the trusses.
Since the truss spans 40', the top chord temporary lateral bracing
members must be 8" O.C. max. There will be a long diagonal
member running into the ground and secured with a stake. In
addition, there is a horizontal member and short diagonal members
to provide support for the bracing system. The tallest point of the
truss, 24-0", will use a 33'-11" long diagonal using 2x10s in a "T"
formation for the long diagonal support. The intermediate heights on
either side at 21'-0" will use 29'-8" diagonals using 2x10s stacked in
a "T" formation for the long diagonal support. Lastly, the lower level
heights on either side at 18'-0" will use 25'-5 1/2" diagonals using
2x8's stacked in a "T" formation for the long diagonal support.
