THE EXORCIST

POSTER
ANALYSIS
IMAGE:
The setting is of a house, in an unknown,
isolated area. There is marginalisation of the
character as he is seen to be alone standing
outside this mysterious building.
The long shot sets the scene conventional of a
poster, whilst the unknown element is
conventional of the typical horror genre.
MISE-EN-SCENE:
The darkness of the image, with only one beam
of light contrast with one another: the darkness
is typical of danger and horror, whilst the light
suggests to the audience that there is purity
shining onto this character, linking to how he is
significant in trying to overcome the demon
through an exorcism.
NARRATIVE:
Darkness into the light resembles the exorcist:
hes the main character, here to help and
therefore is key to the narrative. His silhouette
makes the audience question his mysterious
characterisation, making us want to watch it.

TEXT:
Capitalised san-serif font adds to
the nature of the film. It is an oldfashioned style setting the era of
the film and adding to an eery
atmosphere. The bold style stands
out to the audience making them
immediately read it whilst the
purple writing suggests a sense of
mystery and is not conventional to
the horror genre.

COLOUR:
BLACK signifies strength, negativity and depth:
linking to the horror genre, indicating to the
audience that this film will include fearful events.
LIGHT signifies positivity and warmth: its shining
upon the unknown character, highlighting how he is
pure, leaving us to question who or what isnt
leading to the audience wanting to watch it.
PURPLE&WHITE: it contrasts to the black making the
audience read it straight away. Exorcist crates
curiosity.
LAYOUT:
One whole image is used (no montage of images
typical of a film poster). The central image shows its
significance and keeps the audience intrigued. The
writing is bold underneath the image, answering
some questions about the image, such as the idea
the man is going to help, yet it also adds much more

CAMERA DISTANCE:
It sets the scene through the choice of a long
shot. No speech is involved, just the simple
image by itself to not take away from its effect.
The isolation of one character, turned away, in
silhouette form creates curiosity as to who he is,
as this is not revealed, the audience is left to
question and watch in order to found out.
