1. Goal
To develop a general guide in the repair of common mobile phone defects (Level 2 ) in order to carry
out a fast and systematic repair.
2. Scope
Need the use o f simple equipment like voltmeter, soldering iron, tweezer, special-purpose
screwdriver, power source, and some conventional handset parts such as loudspeaker, motor, LCM,
receiver, and microphone in order to carry out the repair on the phone.
3. Definition
1. Loudspeaker resonant cavity: The loudspeaker and the outer cover assembly to form a space.
2. Foreign

material: A material that is not a normal component of the handset or a part that is

separated from the handset.


4. Common mobile phone defects
1. Sound: Does not have the sound, the sound is small, the sound has static noise.
2. Vibration: Does not vibrate, the vibration noise is big, the vibration is too weak.
3. Speaker: The speaker sound is muted, the speaker sound is small, the static sound is big.
4. During a call conversation, the opposite line receives an abnormal communication. Opposite party
cannot hear the sound, the sound is small, the static sound is big, or voice cannot be heard.
5. Operating keys: Some pressed keys malfunction, group o f keys malfunction, all pressed key
malfunctions.
6. Display: The screen has no display, screen displays line marks, the screen displays multi-color,
backlight do not turn on, backlight always on.
7. Charging: Cannot charge, the charge icon is on but battery is not getting charged, cannot full
charge.
8. Startup: Cannot turn on, the auto shutdown, the black screen phenomenon.
9. Earphone: After inserting the earphone, the screen does not display the earphone icon, earphone
speaker is muted, earphone button is not working.
10. Current consumption: The battery life is short.
11. Card reading error: Does not read the SIM card.
12. Network signal: The signal is weak, does not have the network.

5. Trouble shooting guide


5.1 Sound
1. Does not have the sound: Check the handset if the setting was set to mute, or to the vibration
mode only. Check whether the loudspeaker lead wire does loosen or the loud speaker itself has been
damaged.
2. The sound is small: C heck the volume setting, the volume may have been set to the minimum
level. Check if the loudspeaker resonant cavity is free from dust and other foreign materials, or the
loudspeaker itself has been damaged.
3. The sound has static noise: Check if the loudspeaker resonant cavity is free from dust and
other foreign materials, or the loudspeaker itself has been damaged.
5.2 Vibration
1. Does not vibrate: Check whether the handset vibrate mode setting is activated or not, or the
motor lead contacts is loose. Check whether the motor rotor is blocked by a foreign object or whether
the motor itself is damaged.
2. The vibration noise is big: Check whether the motor does become less crowded, or the motor
rotor is blocked by a foreign material, or the motor itself has been damage.
3. Vibration is weak: Check if the motor rotor is blocked by a foreign material, or whether the
motor itself is damaged.
5.3 Speaker
1. The speaker sound is muted: Check whether the speaker wire connection has turn loose, the
receiver opening was blocked by foreign material, or whether the speaker itself has been damaged.
2. The speaker sound is small: Check whether the handset volume level setting is set to
minimum level, the receiver opening was blocked by foreign material, or whether the speaker itself
has been damaged.
3. The speaker static sound is big: Check if the speaker resonant cavity is free from dust and
other foreign materials, the network signal is too weak, the handset surrounding have serious
electromagnetic wave interference, or whether the speaker itself has been damaged.
5.4 During a call conversation, the opposite line receives an abnormal communication.

Opposite party does not hear: During the telephone conversation, must speak very close to the
microphone hole, check if the hole is blocked by foreign object, the microphone wire has been cut or
the solder joint has been disconnected, or the microphone itself has been damaged.
2. Opposite party listens to the sound to be small: During the telephone conversation, must speak
very close to the microphone hole, check if the hole is blocked by foreign object, or the microphone

itself has been damaged.
3. Opposite party hears loud static sound: During the call conversation, check if the handset
surrounding has serious electromagnetic wave interference, the network signal is too weak, or
whether the speaker itself has been damaged.
5.5 Operating keys
1. Some pressed key malfunction: Check

the underside o f the key for any obstruction like

foreign objects or the contact point went to oxidization.


2. Some group of pressed key malfunction: Check the underside of this group of keys for any
obstruction like foreign objects or the contact points went to oxidization, in most situations is caused
by faulty pin soldered joints in the CPU or the CPU has been damaged.
3. All pressed key malfunction: Check the underside of the keys for an y obstruction like foreign
objects or the contact point went to oxidization, the key contacts has short circuit or the CPU is
damaged.
5.6 Display
1. Screen has no display: Check whether the LCD soldering joints is good, the LC M connector
to the contact pins is good, or the LC D material h as been damaged.
2. Screen displays line marks: Check whether the LCD soldering joints is good, or the LCD
material has been damaged.
3. Screen displays multi-color: Check whether the LCD soldering joints is good, or the LCD
material has been damaged.
4. Backlight does not turn on: Check whether the LCD soldering joints is good, or the LCM
material has been damaged.
5. Backlight always on: Check whether the backlight setting is set to Always on, or the LCM
material has been damaged.
5.7 Charging
1. Cannot charge: The phone will not respond f or charging when the battery voltage is lower
than 3V, or check if the battery was not properly installed.
2. The charge icon is on but battery is not getting charged: The battery and/or the charger may
have been damaged.
3. Battery cannot full charge: The battery and/o r the charger may have been damaged.
5.8 Startup
1. Cannot turn on: Check whether the battery have enough power or have been damaged, check
the battery terminals in the PCB whether it has some dirt or has oxidize.
2. Auto turn off: Check whether the battery have power or have been damaged, check the battery
terminals in the PCB whether the contact is good.

5.9 Earphone
1. After inserting the earphone, the screen does n ot display the earphone icon: Check whether the
Earphone jack has faulty solder joint, the earphone plug was not completely inserted into the
earphone jack, the earphone is damaged.
2. Earphone speaker has no sound: Check whether the Earphone jack has faulty solder joint, the
earphone plug was not completely inserted into the earphone jack, the earphone is damaged.
3. The earphone button is not working: Check whether the Earphone jack h as faulty solder joint,
the earphone plug was not completely inserted into the earphone jack, the earphone is damaged.
5.10 Current consumption
1. Battery life is short: Check whether the phone is using the designated battery and battery
charger, the battery has been fully charged prior to use, check whether the battery and/or the charger
is damaged.
5.11 Card reading error
Phone cannot read the SIM card: Check whether the contact pins are dirty or hav e oxidize, check
if the SIM holder is properly soldered in place, or the SIM card holder has faulty solder ed joints.
5.12 Network signal
1. The signal is weak: Check whether the antenna pin connection into the PCB was not broken
or the pin connection was off, whether the antenna itself is damaged.
2. No Network: Check whether the antenna pin connection into the PCB was not broken or the
pin connection was off, check whether the SIM card is damaged or the subscription has expired.

Note: In the above repair guide that requires a change of motherboard (PCBA) and/or bad
components, it may need the use of some equipment to complete the repair.
