TUTORIAL SHEET (NO.11) ON BENDING STRESSES
Q.1. A steel bar AB was placed in a testing machine and subjected to 60 kN load. An
extensometer placed on the load-line recorded an extension of 0.16mm per 200mm gauge
length. Calculate the maximum and minimum stresses set up and the Youngs modulus.
[Ans. 240 MPa, 210 GPa].

Q.2. An aluminium-steel composite beam with a cross-section as shown in subjected to a
positive bending moment 72000Nm. Determine maximum bending stress in each material.
Esteel = 210GPa, Ealuminium = 70GPa. [Ans. 87 MPa, ..]

Q.3. A CI beam CD has an inverted T section. Tensile strength t of CI is almost a third of

its compressive strength c. Determine so that extreme fibre stresses are t and c
simultaneously. Determine 0 for a given t.

Q.4. A steel-wood simply supported beam has a uniformly distributed load of 10kN/m and
a span of 10m. The steel plates are fastened to the wood core. What is the magnitude of the
force to be taken up by the fasteners? Esteel = 200GPa, Ewood = 7GPa.
