Unit Title: Polynomial Operations

Name: Melody Volen

Content Area: Math-Algebra I

Grade Level: 9-11

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions A-APR
Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials.
1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations
of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Understand the relationship between zeros and factors of polynomials.
2. Know and apply the Remainder Theorem: For a polynomial p(x) and a number a, the remainder on division by x a is
p(a), so p(a) = 0 if and only if (x a) is a factor of p(x).
3. Identify zeros of polynomials when suitable factorizations are available, and use the zeros to construct a rough graph
of the function defined by the polynomial.
Use polynomial identities to solve problems.
4. Prove polynomial identities and use them to describe numerical relationships. For example, the polynomial identity

(x 2+ y 2)2=( x2 y 2 )2+(2 xy)2

can be used to generate Pythagorean triples.

5. (+) Know and apply the Binomial Theorem for the expansion of

( x+ y)n

in powers of x and y for a positive integer

n, where x and y are any numbers, with coefficients determined for example by Pascals Triangle.1
Rewrite rational expressions.
6. Rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms; write a(x)/b(x) in the form q(x) + r(x)/b(x), where a(x), b(x),
q(x), and r(x) are polynomials with the degree of r(x) less than the degree of b(x), using inspection, long division, or, for
the more complicated examples, a computer algebra system.
7. (+) Understand that rational expressions form a system analogous to the rational numbers, closed under addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division by a nonzero rational expression; add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational
expressions.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

How can we add, subtract and multiply polynomials? Do they have to be the same degree?
How using polynomial arithmetic can help us to determine perimeters and areas of shapes.
Discover what careers actually use polynomials on the job.
How can we use the remainder theorem to help us understand the relationship between zeros and
factors of polynomials?
How we can use the zeros, end behavior, degree of polynomial and odd or even polynomials to
sketch rough graphs.
Discover real life scenarios that we use polynomial arithmetic.

Unit Summary:

Students will use arithmetic on polynomials and rational expressions to add, subtract, multiply and divide them.
Students will understand what like terms are, and the difference between adding or subtracting and multiplying like
terms. Students will discover some real life applications using polynomials, as well as what careers might require
knowledge of polynomials. Students will use the Remainder Theorem to understand roots and factors of a polynomial.
In addition, students will be able to use several methods to factor polynomials and find the roots of the function. Once
the student has found the root(s) they will then learn how to use the degree, if the function is odd or even and how the
end behavior behaves to sketch rough graphs of these functions. Using the Binomial Theorem, students will be able to
expand more difficult polynomials. Overall, students should understand polynomials, these topics connecting them and
how they might apply them to real life situations.

Students will be able to add,

subtract and multiply polynomials.

Students will be given guided

notes or they can download them
to their device to follow along with
a lecture. They will answer
understanding questions
throughout the presentation and
solve examples provided.

Students will be able to divide

polynomials using long division.

Lesson Activities:
Students will observe a lecture that discusses the arithmetic of
polynomials. The lecture will go over the how tos of adding,
subtracting, multiplying and division of polynomials. The rules of the
operations with each will be discussed in detail. Students will learn
how to apply polynomials in real life and discover uses for them in
careers. At the end of the lecture, students should be able to make
connections between adding and subtracting polynomials and their
similarities, as well as how to multiply or divide polynomials. Guided
notes will be provided for this lesson, which the student can
download if they wish. These notes will assist students to follow along
with the lecture as well as work out the examples to have for
studying for homework or exams.

Lesson 2
