Subject: IPP05 (Process equipment Design)

1 A storage tank with capacity of 5000 m3 is to be designed. The cost of fabrication of
shell per unit area is 1.5 time of the cost of fabrication of bottom per unit area. The
cost of fabrication of roof per unit area (projected) is 1.2 times of cost of fabrication
of bottom per unit area. Combined cost of land and foundation is 0.8 times of cost of
fabrication of bottom per unit area. Calculate the optimum dimensions of the tank.
Compare the Prepare the bill of materials for shell by choosing appropriate width of
the plate between 1.5m, 1.8 m, and 2.0 m.
2 A firm is fabricating a vessel with 40 m inside diameter and 16 m height.
(i)
Design the shell and bottom of the tank.
(ii)
(iii)

Design wind girders if required

Design top curb angle if it is an open tank. Calculate the minimum section
modulus and girder dimensions of detail E are forming the wind girders if
required. Material of construction is IS 2062-1969. The design
temperature is 150oC. Neglect corrosion allowance
3 A closed vessel with 30 m inside diameter and 16 m height is provided with
supported conical roof, Design top curb angle, rafters, girders & column of the
support structure. Neglect corrosion allowance. Use IS 808 for structural steel
sections
4 Is it possible to have unsupported roof for the above tank? If yes design the un
supported roof with minimum thickness. Neglect corrosion allowance
