Turning Procedure

Step #1 FACING OFF AND CENTER DRILLING

Mount a three jawed chuck onto the head stock
Install a Drill chuck into your tailstock
Secure your stock in the three jawed chuck with about 1 2 extending
out beyond the jaws
Using your right handed cutting tool square or face off the end of the
stock. You want to take off just enough material to clean up the end so
make sure that you are not taking too aggressive of a pass.
Insert a #4 (stamped on to the drill) center drill into the drill chuck on your
tailstock
Center drill the end about deep
Take your part out of the three jawed chuck, flip it over, and secure it back
in the chuck
Face off the second end. Take off the smallest amount of material possible
Center drill the second end about
When done, remove the 3 jaw chuck from the headstock and the drill
chuck from the tailstock.

Step #2 MACHINING THE MAJOR DIAMETER

Install a dead center into your headstock
Mount a faceplate onto your headstock
Install a live center into your tailstock
Secure a vise dog onto your part, securing it as close to the end as
possible.
Insert your part between centers and lock down the tailstock. Make certain
that any play has been removed and that the set up is correct and secured
before turning on the machine.

Set up the tool on center and square to the part. This can be done using a
fishtail. Refer to the pictures below.

Start by machining your major diameter of 0.900 from tailstock to

headstock. You will not be able to machine the entire length because of the
vice dog. This will be addressed in future steps. Run your passes right up
to the vice dog.
Use the sleeve on the cross slide to keep track of the depth of cut on each
pass. Recommended depth per pass should not exceed .020 or 20 units on
the sleeve. You can either zero out the sleeve or simply pay attention to
what number you start on. Remember your tolerance is +/- 0.004 so be as
accurate as possible.
Make sure to use your auto feed on the last pass to achieve a nice pretty
surface finish.

Step #3 MACHINING THE MINOR DIAMETER

Take your part out of the lathe, blue it up, and lay out where the diameters
change using the height gauge. To achieve this properly, make sure to put
the minor diameter or un-machined end down against the surface plate and
scribe a line at 3.5.
Secure a vice dog on the 0.900 end and install the part into the lathe. Be
sure that your setup is correct and secured before turning on the machine.
(The un-machined end should be towards the tailstock)
By hand, machine off the extra material on the end to get a more
consistent diameter.
Machine your minor diameter of 0.750. Run your passes from tailstock to
headstock making sure to stop your cutter at the line you laid out. Again,
the suggested depth of cut per pass should not exceed 0.020 or 20 units
on the sleeve.
Using your knecking tool square up the shoulder or step down where the
diameters change. Make sure to set up your tool square to the part.

Step #4 KNURLING
Install your part between centers with the vice dog attached to the 0.750
or minor diameter section.
Install a knurling tool into the tool holder. Make sure that the tool is out
beyond the compound rest allowing the knurling wheels to be rotated.
Make certain that the knurling tool is square to your part by using a small
machinist square.
Select the knurl (small, medium, or coarse) that you would like and rotate
the desired wheels into position for cutting.
Start with the knurling wheels half on and half off the far right end of the
stock.
Turn on the machine and bring the wheels into the part until both the top
and bottom wheel are spinning.
Wind the cross-slide in .020 and allow the wheels to cut for a several
seconds. Shut off the machine and check the appearance of the knurl. If
satisfied run the pass, if not wind the knurling tool in an additional .010
until you achieve your desired appearance and then run the pass.
Make sure to stop the pass at the step down before getting onto the 0.750
section.

Step #5 BOTTOM FEATURE

Remove your part from the machine
Using the height gage layout a line at 8. Place the 0.750 section down
against the surface plate so that you will layout a line on the 0.900
section.
Secure a vice dog onto the 0.750 section and install it back into the
machine.
Machine the bottom 1 of your piece clean. Remove the knurl from this
section so that it will have a smooth clean surface finish like the 0.750
section has. There is no diameter to hit here, just machine it clean.
REFER TO YOUR PLAN
Step #6 CUT OFF TO LENGTH
Using the height gage layout a line for your finished length. Place the
0.750 section down against the surface plate and scribe a line at 9.000.
Remove the faceplate, live center, and dead center from the machine.
Install a three jaw chuck onto the head stock
Secure your piece into the three jaw chuck with about 2-3 extending out
beyond the jaws.
Using a hacksaw cut off your piece. Be sure to cut it off over size with the
saw. Leave an additional 1/8 from your line.]
Using your right handed cutting tool face off the end just like you did in
step #1. DO NOT CENTER DRILL THE END.
Step #7 ROUND OVER
With your part still in the three-jaw chuck, use a round over bit to machine
a radius on the 0.900 end of the stock. There is no dimension to hit here
but be sure that you have softened the corner.

Step #8 CHAMFER
With your part still in the three-jaw chuck, use your right handed cutting
tool to machine a small taper on the 0.750 end of you part. This will
assist you when cutting threads.
