‘Dear Ms, Pigman:
‘Lam waiting to support the Asheville Police Department's application tothe “Watch for Me™
bicycle and podestian safety campaign,
Pedestrian and bieyole safety is increasingly an issue ia Asheville in the wake of several notable
snd tagie pedestrian deaths. Indeed, downtown Asheville is a popula destination for pedestrian
tourists. Many of them come to enjoy the local beer and food seene, Our downtown sects
‘often share heavy foot and vehicular trafic. Those on foot dowatowm are often focused more on
‘having good time than on safety and this combination can lead, and has led, to tragic ends. Ik is
‘my belief that both strong public information campaign and a vigorous enforcement campaign
‘would deepen awareness of the rights of eyelists and pedestrians. ‘The District Atlomey's Office,
‘therefore, wil flly support Asheville Police Deparment in te implementation of "Watch for
Me” goals
tis my hope that tis letter will aid in suppor of the Asheville Police Departments aplication
for asistance in implementing “Watch for Me” in Asheville, North Carolina.

‘Throughout the community we have noted a numberof ways the City has improved conditions for biey-

improvements near severl of our schools. The Watch for Me NC program isa great way to build upon the
City’s excellent work to date,
Asheville has the mos active pedestrian community I have ever witnessed. Because ofthat, we al share the
responsibilty of making our community a safe an place to walk... especially forthe significant nmber
of our children and families who walk or bieyel to our nine schools. The Watch for Me'NC campaign will
encourage motoriss, bieyelists and pedestrians to respect cach other and foster a safer transportation environ-
‘ment in our comnmanity.
‘Tohelp withthe campaign, Asheville City Schools wll gladly disseminate the Watch for Me NC messages
‘hough our channels of communication including traditional printed materials as well as through our rapily
expanding social networks like Facebook and the distict’s mobile app.
Participation in the Watch for Me NC program isa weleome opportunity for Asheville City Schools to work
collaboratively and strengthen our relationships with local pubic works agencies, local law enforcement
agencies elected officals, sohool-parent organizations, parents, and students to promote and use enforcement
and education strategies to address pedestrian and bieyele safety concerns.
‘This collaboration can and will make a difference in addressing on traffic safety concerns. Therefore we are

Dear Watch for Me NC Grant Reviewers,
‘This letter isto show my suppor for the Clyof Ashevile's application to join in the 2015 Watch for Me NC
campaign in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. In years 2008-2012, the City
of Asheville had the highest average yearly pedestrian crash rates and the fourth highest average yearly
bicyele crash rates of cities NC. The Watch of Me NC campaign is much needed to raise awareness of
pedestrian and bicyclist safety ssues and to educate law enforcement and the general public on relevant laws.
‘As the Region 2 Active Routes to School Coordinator, Ithas been my good fortune to work with the City of
Asheville planner and members ofthe Ashull Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force and learn of the extensive
work they have done to improve pedestrian and biycle safety and infrastructure over the years. They area
‘well-coordinated team with connections throughout the county including strong partnerships with aw
enforcement from the Cty of Asheville, UNC-Ashevile and AB Tech.
The Watch for Me NC campaign would dovetal nicely with my Active Routes to School work with schools in
the Asheuile area and answer the requests I've had from Asheville school administrators for more education
and awareness in the community about pedestrian and biyce safety. As Coordinator of Active Routes to
Schoo, I could help with schoo! coordination trainings in enforcement and public education efforts for
pedestrian and bicycle safety, help disseminate Watch for Me NC materials through Walk and Bike to School
Day events and Let’s Go NC curriculum trainings, provide resources fr the Wotch for Me NC kick-off event,
support any walkability and/or bkeablty assessments and asistin program evaluation.
The Watch for Me NC grant funding will provide much needed media resources and taining opportunities to
Increase community awareness of pedestrian and bike safety and enforcement. Receipt of the Watch for Me
[NC grant will provide an opportunity for the Active Routes to School grant to leverage its resources with an
‘outstanding team thats sure to achieve an impressive impact.
‘Tanks for your time and consideration of the grant application.
