This device is used to support a roll of

fabric that is going to be unwinded. In
order to do so, a force of 1200 N is
pulling from the fabric as shown by the
vector in the figure. All dimensions in the
figure are in mm.

Roll of fabric

We want to check if the square tubular

section at the bottom of the pillar is safe.

Pillar

You are asked to:

Section to
check

1- Complete the FBD of the pillar in its

three views. Draw all the forces,
obviously including the internal forces
and moments in its correct direction and
sense. Write the equilibrium equations
and calculate all of the unknowns. Be
very careful and check for coherence.

2- Draw every stress distribution/stress flow

that appears in the section copying this
drawing for each internal force. Calculate
the maximum values and indicate to which
points they belong. Take into account that
the tube wall thickness is 6 mm.

3- Choose the two points with the most

demanding stress state. Identify them in a
view of the section like the one above.
Represent for each point its state of stress
in a stress element like the one in the
figure.

4- Draw Mohrs circle of both stress elements. Give the principal stresses of each circle.
5- Calculate the safety factor of the most dangerous point if the pillar is made of steel C22E with Sut =
500 MPa and Sy = 340 MPa.
6- If in the section to check there was a circular hole like shown in the figure, calculate at least two
pertinent stress concentration factors clearly indicating the graphs that you have used and sketching
them with the input parameters and the output
result.
