Machine description

1.1

Intended use of equipment

Intended use of the equipment is automatic centring, de-bunging and filling of containers as per
specifications given on the form VK-06 of our order documents. A functional guarantee will only
be given for those containers that have been checked and tested in our factory during commissioning. Any modification is subject to our approval.

1.2

Tasks

Filling is done in below-surface mode.

The equipment is designed for the installation and operation in non hazardous area and may neither be used for filling explosive products or cleaning with explosive products (see improper use
of equipment).

1.3

Improper use of the equipment

Non hazardous area application

As per design, filling equipment to be used in non hazardous areas may only be installed / operated for filling, purging and cleaning with products that do not produce inflammable gas, vapours,
fumes or aerosols. However, this equipment may not be used in hazardous zones 0, 1 or 2.
These zones are indicated in the explosion protection document (zoning plan) according to the
EC directive 1999/92. This kind of filling equipment does not fulfil the demands of EC directive
94/9 ATEX.

Vapour pressure
The filling equipment may not be used to fill single or multicomponent liquids where the vapour
pressure pd is 0.5bar above normal pressure at filling temperature (see directive 97/23/EC item
3).

Further conditions

Installation of equipment
The floor on which the equipment is to be installed must be suitable for strain (150daN/cm) and
tensile force for the handling of composite anchors (chemical anchor bolts) with a diameter of
16mm max; thickness of concrete floor min. 170 mm. A reinforced floor is then not necessary.
The unevenness of the area where the equipment is to be installed may not be more than 30 mm
(incline). If the unevenness is higher the customer has to take measures to support the levelling
feet.

Compressed air supply

Compressed air must be dry and free of dirt and oil. Compressed air must be available at the
central connecting point as shown in the layout drawing. From here on, the equipment is completely hosed.
The required operating medium compressed air must correspond to the requirements of DIN ISO
8573-1 class 4 and a dynamic pressure of 6 bars.

Nitrogen supply
Nitrogen must be available at the central connecting point as shown in the layout drawing. From
here on, the equipment is completely hosed.

Electrical supply
Mains supply to the main control cabinet is part of the customer.
Cable laying within the machine is done via open conduits or protective hoses and is part of
FEIGE.

Product supply
Product feed to the product hose inlets is on the part of the customer. 24m3/h for each filling
valve, with a feed pressure of 0,5 to 1,5 bar (at infeed product connection).
The customer has to see that the pressure of the product line be kept constant during the whole
filling process. Temporary pressure variations in the product line that are due to process engineering and long product lines and that do not exceed the dynamic pressure by +/- 10% are admissible. Higher pressure variations must be avoided as output and function of the equipment
would be affected in a negative way.

Ensure nitrogen supply.
Ensure exhaust.
Ensure product supply.
Ensure power supply (turn on the main switch at the main control cabinet)
Provide for drums.
Select the required product file at the operator panel.
Adjust the base height of the filling unit to the required container height. (See note: Base height
adjustment)
Check the oiler level at the air supply unit. The debunging head may only be operated with oiled
air.

Working principle of equipment

The operator works on an operating platform provided on site. Weigh scale functions, transport
functions, acknowledgement, emergency stop are enabled/ disabled via control panel that is located at the filling machine.
Closed empty drums are placed by an operator on the in-feed position of the roller conveyor
RBF1. The drums are stopped by the separator in line in front of the automatic positioning and
debunging station.

The transport within the drum filler is done via a cycled chain conveyor. Light barriers monitor
whether drums are available on dedicated positions on the chain conveyor track.
The chain conveyor exactly positions the drums in front of the working stations.

3.1

1st station: Centring, positioning and debunging

On demand of the automatic drum filler a drum is separated and transported to the first station. In
this station the drum is raised from the conveyor chains. Afterwards it is centred to its vertical axis and turned. Simultaneously, the bunghole position at the plug is located and the drum is
stopped when the bunghole has got its correct position for debunging resp. has reached its filling
position.
The debunging tool (mounted at a carriage which also holds the bunghole location device) moves
above the aligned bunghole position. Then the debunging tool automatically debungs the drum.
The debunged plug is placed on the top of the drum.
With the next cycle the drum is transferred from the 1st station to the 2nd station. Simultaneously
a new drum reaches the 1st station.

3.1

2nd station: Inert gas purging and pre filling

Filling takes place in two steps (cycles) - pre- and final filling.
The drum is lifted off the carrying chain conveyor and rests only on the weigh scale.
The weigh scale automatically tares. The tare weight is transmitted to the final filling unit.
The filling lance descends into the drum (See note: Lance reversing via scale control).
The drip scoop pivots back activated by the filling lance stroke. (See note: Drip scoop)
Nitrogen is injected into the drum via double jacket filling lance. The inert gas flow is monitored.
Purging time is entered at the Feige scale terminal and stored as a machine parameter in the
product data record.
After Nitrogen purging the filling valve opens for coarse fill.
Gas escaping from the bunghole is absorbed by a gas hood. (See note: Gas hood)
The filling lance stays in the lower position until it is immersed 50 - 100 mm in the product which
corresponds to a set weight. As long as the filling lance is not immersed the container is filled
above-surface.
The filling lance raises, still being immersed in the product, following the ascending product level
to the upper fill position.
The filling lance shuts off when the pre-fill weight is reached and quickly returns to the top position.
Due to automatic control of the pre-fill quantity the fill times of the pre- and final-filling stations are
adjusted to each other.
Automatic adjustment of the pre-fill quantity is limited so that the filling valve of the final filling station shuts off by a preset time before the filling valve of the pre-filling station.

The drip scoop moves below the lance tip.

The drum is conveyed to the 3rd station.

3.1

3rd station: Final filling

The drum is lifted off the carrying chain conveyor and rests only on the weigh scale.
The tare weight has been transmitted by the pre-filling station.
The filling lance descends into the drum to a preset level and opens.
The drip scoop pivots back activated by the filling lance stroke.
Gas escaping from the bunghole is absorbed by a gas hood. (See note: Gas hood)
The filling lance raises, still being immersed in the product, following the ascending product level
to the upper fill position (approx. 50 - 100 mm below the bunghole).
Filling is done in coarse and fine fill, controlled by the weigh scale.
Fine fill starts when approx. 90 to 95% of the target weight is reached.
Fill time and fill quantity is automatically optimised.
The filling lance quickly returns to the top position.
The drip scoop moves below the lance tip.
The tolerance check of the target weight starts.
In case of minus deviation, the filing weight is automatically corrected.
Minus or plus deviation lead to an error message.
Filling is completed once the target weight is within the preset tolerance range.
The filled drum is transported out of the drum filler to the following roller conveyor RBF2.

3.2

Manual bunging and sealing station

The drum is stopped by the separator. One following drum can be accumulated. The operator
manually closes and seals the drums via pneumatic tools. The tools are mounted spring balanced at a rail and can easily be moved.
The operator releases the drum by activating the foot switch. The next drum is transported to the
manual bunging station.
The drum is transported to the end of the conveyor and is stopped at the stationary limit stop.
An operator removes the drum from the conveyor.

Filling valve change

Remove the covering of the gas hood. Unlock the locking bolt at the holder of the wiper ring.
Remove the wiper ring.
Activate the valve cleaning/ valve change mode via operator panel. Lower the filling lance by
pressing the corresponding button.
Open the hand slide valve at the valve mount. Now the system is depressurised. Open the flap of
the filling valve mount. Remove the filling valve.
Insert the filling valve into the valve rack. Install another filling valve into the filling station.
Terminate the cleaning/ valve change mode via operator panel. The filling valve moves to the
base position.
Mount wiper ring and gas hood cover.

Notes

Manual base height adjustment for the filling unit with crank
Via base height adjustment the filling unit is adjusted to the required container height when containers are changed. The adjustment is done via crank located at the frame. Markers have been
attached to the base height adjustment to ensure the correct height is adjusted when the containers are changed.
Drip scoop type TF-S
The swiveling drip scoop is activated via lance stroke and catches any drips from the lance when
filling is completed. The next time the lance descends in the container the drip scoop swivels
and the collected product is dispensed into the container.
Lance reversing via scale control
If the lance is not aligned with the bunghole and contacts the drum on the way down, its movement is being reversed. An error message is displayed at the scale terminal. The filling lance or
the drum must manually be re-aligned and filling be re-started.
Lance reversing is activated via scale control when the lance contacts the drum with a predetermined weight. This weight is entered at the scale terminal.
Gas hood
The gas hood surrounds the filling valve. Gas escaping from the containers is absorbed and can
be discharged by means of customers exhaust.
Exhaust line to the gas hood must be provided by the customer.
Exhaust connection DN 80. We recommend connecting the gas hood to an exhaust with airflow
of 180m/h.
Note: Product hose suspension
The product hose suspension serves for leading the product hose to the filling valve over the entire movement range of the filling column.
The hose is mounted at a spring balancer via hose band.
