century.AhighlyinfluentialfigureinBrazil'shistoryinthe
firstcenturyafteritsEuropeandiscovery,Anchietawasone
ofthefoundersofSoPauloin1554andofRiodeJaneiroin
1565.Heisthefirstplaywright,thefirstgrammarianandthe
firstpoetbornintheCanaryIslands,andthefatherof
Brazilianliterature.Anchietawasalsoinvolvedinthe
religiousinstructionandconversiontotheCatholicfaithof
theIndianpopulation.Hiseffortsalongwiththoseofanother
Jesuitmissionary,ManueldaNbrega,atIndianpacification
werecrucialtotheestablishmentofstablecolonial
settlementsinthecolony.

Hisfather,JuanAnchietayZelaiaran,wasalandownerfromUrrestilla,intheBasqueCountry,whohad
escapedtoTenerifein1525afterparticipatinginanunsuccessfulrebellionagainsttheEmperorCharlesV.
Throughhim,AnchietawasrelatedtoIgnatiusofLoyola,founderoftheSocietyofJesus.[1]Hismotherwas
MenciaDazdeClavijoyLlarena,adescendantoftheconquerorsofTenerife.
Whenhewas14yearsold,AnchietawenttostudyinPortugalattheRoyalCollegeofArtsinCoimbra.Hewas
intenselyreligiousandfelthehadavocationforthepriesthood.HesoughtadmissiontotheJesuitCollegeof
theUniversityofCoimbraandwasacceptedintotheJesuitson1May1551,attheageof17.[1]Whilehewasa
novice,henearlyruinedhishealthbyhisexcessiveausterity,causinganinjurytothespinethatmadehim
almostahunchback.[3]HelearnedtowritePortugueseandLatinaswellashismothertongue.

MissionaryinBrazil
In1553,theJesuitsincludedAnchietaamongthethirdgroupoftheirmemberssenttothePortuguesecolonyof
Brazil,believingthattheclimatewouldimprovehishealth.[1][3]Afteraperilousjourneyandashipwreck,
AnchietaandhissmallgrouparrivedinSoVicente,thefirstvillagethathadbeenfoundedinBrazilin1534.
TherehemadehisfirstcontactwiththeTapuiaIndianslivingintheregion.
Inlate1553,ManueldaNbrega,thefirstProvincialoftheJesuitsinBrazil,sent13JesuitsincludingAnchieta
toclimbtheSerradoMartoaplateaualongtheTietRiverthattheIndianscalledpiratininga(fromTupipira
"fish"+tininga"drying"accordingtoAnchieta,morethan12,000fishcouldbefounddryingalongtheTiet
riverfloodplainsafteroneofitscustomaryfloods.)TheretheJesuitsestablishedasmallmissionarysettlement
andcelebratedMassforthefirsttimeon25January1554,dateoftheconversionofSaintPaul,accordingto
tradition.ThatdateisnowcelebratedasthefoundingofSoPaulo.[4]AnchietaandhisJesuitcolleaguesbegan
theireffortstoinstructthenativepeopleintherudimentsofChristianityandconvertthem,whilealso
introducingbasiceducationinothersubjects.HetaughtLatintotheIndians,begantolearntheirlanguage,Old
Tupi,andstartedcompilingadictionaryandagrammar.Theirmissionsettlement,theJesuitCollegeofSo
PauloofPiratininga,soondevelopedintoasmallpopulationcenter.
AnchietaandNbregahadlongopposedthewaythePortuguesecolonistsweretreatingtheIndiansandhada
seriousconflictaboutitwithDuartedaCosta,whoservedasGovernorGeneralofBrazilfrom1553to1558.
TheyneverthelesssupportedthePortugueseagainsttheirFrenchrivalsinestablishingclaimstoBraziland
welcomedthesupportofPortugueseauthoritiesagainsttheHuguenotProtestantswhomtheFrenchattimes
welcomedtotheirsettlements.Infact,thetwoJesuitssawtheFrenchcolonyasagenerallyProtestant
enterprise,ignoringitsCatholiccomponentsandmakingnodistinctionbetweenLutheransandCalvinists.[5]
Anchietarecognizedthatviolencecouldbenecessarytocreatetheconditionsforevangelizingtheindigenous
inhabitantsandlaterpraisedthecolony'sthirdGovernorGeneral,MemdeS(15001572),forwhathe
accomplishedinkillinglargenumbersofAmerindians.[6]
DuetothesystematickillingsandransackingoftheirvillagesbythePortuguesecolonistsandattemptsat
enslavingthem,theIndiantribesalongthecoastofthepresentdaystatesofSoPaulo,RiodeJaneiroand
EspritoSantorebelledandformedanalliance,theTamoyoConfederation,whichsoonalliedthemselvesthe
FrenchcolonistswhohadsettledinGuanabaraBayin1555underthecommandofViceAdmiralNicolas
DuranddeVillegaignon.Theconflictwasbrutalandatoncebothinternationalandinterreligious.Inone
instancethePortuguesehungtenFrenchmeninanattempttointimidatetheirenemiesintosubmission.In
anotherin1557,aProtestantnamedJacquesleBalleurwasputtodeathandAnchieta,insomeinterpretations,
helpedtheexecutionercarryoutthesentence,[7]thoughthefactsaremuchdisputed.[8]
TheTamoyoConfederationattackedSoPauloseveraltimesbetween1562and1564withoutsuccess.Anchieta
andNbregainitiatedpeacenegotiationswiththeTamoyosinthevillageofIperoiginmodernUbatubaonthe
northerncoastofSoPaulostate.Anchieta'sskillwiththeTupilanguagewascrucialintheseefforts.After

manyincidentsandthenearmassacreofAnchietaandNbregabytheIndians,theyfinallysucceededin
gainingtheIndians'confidence,andpeacewasestablishedbetweentheTamoyoandTupiniquimnationsand
thePortuguese.
PortugueseFrenchhostilitieswererenewedwhenEstciodeS,anephewofthenewGovernorGeneralof
Brazil,MemdeS(15001572),wasorderedtoexpeltheFrenchcolonists.Withthesupportandblessingsof
AnchietaandNbrega,hedepartedwithanarmyfromSoVicenteandfoundedtherampartsofRiodeJaneiro
atthefootofPodeAcar,in1565.Anchietawaswithhimandparticipatedinanumberofbattlesbetween
thePortugueseandtheFrench,eachsidesupportedbytheirIndianallies.Heactedasasurgeonandinterpreter.
Hewasalsoresponsibleforreportingbacktothegovernorgeneral'sheadquartersinSalvador,Bahia,and
participatedinthefinalvictoriousbattleagainsttheFrenchin1567.
Afterthepeacesettlement,aJesuitcollegewasfoundedinRio
underthedirectionofNbrega.Anchietawasinvitedtoremainand
succeededhimuponhisdeathin1570.Despitehisfrailtyandill
health,andtherigorsofslowtravelbyfootandshipofthetime,
overthenexttenyearsAnchietatraveledextensivelybetweenRio
deJaneiro,Bahia,EspritoSantoandSoPaulo,consolidatingthe
JesuitmissioninBrazil.In1577thefourthsuperiorgeneralofthe
Jesuits,EverardMercurian,appointedAnchietaprovincialsuperior
oftheorder'smembersinBrazil.
Ashishealthworsened,Anchietarequestedrelieffromhisdutiesin
1591.HediedinBrazilon9June1597,atReritiba,EspritoSanto,
mournedbymorethan3,000Indians.

Works
InthetraditionofJesuits,Anchietawasaprolificrapporteur,
communicatingbyletterstohissuperiors.Hisreportsestablishhim
asanethnographer,thoughhefocusedonAmerindianbehaviorthat
StatueofFatherAnchietainSantos,Brazil
didnotfollowEuropeannorms,suchastheirchoiceofmarriage
partners,cannibalism,andtheroleofsorcerers.[9]Hisdetailed
testimonywithrespecttocannibalismisoftencitedbyanthropologists.Heexplained,forexample,thatthe
Amerindians"believethattruekinshipcomesfromthesideofthefathers,whoaretheagents,and...thatthe
mothersarenothingmorethanbagsinwhichthechildrengrow"andthereforetreatthechildrenofacaptured
femaleandamemberoftheirtribewithrespectbutsometimeseatthechildrenofacapturedmaleandafemale
memberoftheirowntribe.[10]Hedetailedthepracticeofpolygamyand,becauseithadproduceddense
networksofinterrelations,advocatedeasingtheChurch'sconsanguinityrulestoallowallbutbrothersand
sisterstomarry.[6]
AnchietawaspioneerintranscribingtheOldTupilanguageandauthoredthefirstpublishedworkonthat
language,a"pathbreaking"grammar,ArtedegramticadalnguamaisusadanacostadoBrasil,writtenin
1555andpublishedin1589.[11]Accordingtooneassessment,"Hisgrammaranddictionarystillrankamongthe
besteverproducedofaBrazilianlanguage,nearly500yearslater....Anchietawasadedicatedlinguistwhose
workcanbeconsideredthebeginningofAmazonianlinguistics(indeeditwouldnotbestretchingmatterstoo
fartocallhisworkthebeginningoflinguisticsintheAmericas."[12]Hiswrittenworksintheindigenous
languagespantheology,religiousinstruction,theaterandpoetry.
Hewasalsoahistorian,authorofabiographyofMemdeS(15001572),thethirdgovernorofthecolonyof
Brazil.Composedofhexameters,DeGestisMenideSaa,isthefirstepicabouttheAmericas.ItpresentsdeS
as"aChristianUlyssesdeterminedtooustSatan"who"presides...overhordesofdemonicAmerindians,
creaturesdevotedtodismemberingbodies".WiththearrivaloftheJesuits,"theCrossexpelsdemons"and
"shamanslosepreternaturalpowerastheymovefromthewildernessintothecivilizedmissions".[13]Thatwork

Mary.TraditionholdsthatAnchietacomposeditwhileincaptivityatIperoigin1563bywritingversesinthe
wetsandofthebeachandmemorizingeachday'slinessothatuponhisreleasehecouldwriteits4,900verses
onpaperintheirentirety.[14]
Hisdramas,writteninacombinationofTupi,Portuguese,Spanish,and
Latin,werenotmeantforthestage,butforperformancebylocal
amateursinvillagesquaresandchurchyards.Theyweretraditionalin
form,writteninversewithfivelinestanzas,aliteraryformknownas
theauto,aPortuguesedevotionaldrama,followingthetraditionthe
Jesuitshaddevelopedofusingthetheaterfirstinclassroomsandthen
forpopularinstruction.Castswereallmale,bothnativeandEuropean,
andbothgroupsweremeanttolearnfromthedramas'instructionin
Christianmorals.Theywerewrittenforspecialoccasionslikeasaint's
feastdayortomarkthearrivalofrelicsinthecolony.Scholarshave
notedthattheycontainconsiderable"contextualinformation",thatis
referencestolocaleventssuchasvillagerivalries.Forexample,
AmerindiancannibalismisjuxtaposedwiththeroastingofSt.
Lawrence.[9]Fewofhisplayssurvive,butthosethatdohavebeen
praised,despitebeingcraftedforalocalaudiencewithadidactic
purpose,fortheir"remarkablefeelingforspectacle,callingfortheuse

ofbodypaint,nativecostumes,songanddance,fights,torches,and
processions".[14]Aperformancemightevencallforcannonfirefroma
nearbyship,thoughtheplaysweretypically"shortonactionandlongonexplanationsofdoctrine"and
charactersthatfallclearlyintopositiveandnegativetypes.[9]Anchieta's"autodapregaouniversel"of1567
andpublishedin1672,isthefirstdramatictextinBrazilianletters.[14]
Asakeennaturalist,hedescribedseveralnewplantsandanimalsamongthenoveltiesofBrazil'swildlifeand
geography.Aclimbingvinehasbeennamedforhim:AnchieteaA.St.Hil.Violaceae.[15]
Hislucidanddetailedreportsarestillimportantforunderstandthebeliefs,manners,andcustomsofthenative
peoplesandEuropeansettlersofthesixteenthcentury.
Hewasalsoanexcellentsurgeonandphysician.
HismanuscriptsweregatheredfromarchivesinPortugalandBrazilinthe1730saspartoftheprocessfor
Anchieta'sbeatificationanddepositedinRome.[9]HisworkshavebeenpublishedasCartas,Informaes,
FragmentosHistricoseSermes(Letters,Reports,HistoricalFragmentsandSermons).

Legacy
JosdeAnchietaiscelebratedasthefounderofBrazilianlettersand,withNbrega,ApostleofBrazil.[3]Hehas
givenhisnametotwocities,Anchieta,intheStateofEspritoSanto(formerlycalledReritiba,theplacewhere
hedied),andAnchieta,inthestateofSantaCatarina,aswellasmanyotherplaces,roads,institutions,
hospitals,andschools.
In1965,theSpanishpostalserviceissuedastampwiththeimageofAnchieta,inaseriescalled"Los
ForjadoresdeAmrica".[16]
NeyLatorracastarredintheBrazilianbiographicalfilm,Anchieta,JosdoBrasil,whichwasreleasedin
1977.[17][18]

"BlessedJosdeAnchieta."PopeFrancisannouncedhiscanonizationasa
sainton3April2014.Heusedaprocessknownasequivalentcanonization
thatdispenseswiththestandardjudicialproceduresandceremoniesinthe
caseofsomeonelongvenerated.[19]AnchietawasthefirstSpanishinbeing
canonizedbyPopeFrancis.[20]
Duringandafterhislife,JosdeAnchietawasconsideredalmosta
supernaturalbeing.Manylegendsformedaroundhim,suchasthatheonce
preachedandcalmedanattackingjaguar.Tothisday,apopulardevotion
holdsthatprayingtoAnchietaprotectsagainstanimalattacks.
JosdeAnchietaishighlyreveredintheCanaryIslands.Abronzestatue
byBrazilianartistBrunoGiorgiinthecityofSanCristbaldeLaLaguna
depictsJosdeAnchietadepartingforPortugal.Itwasagiftfromthe
GovernmentofBraziltoAnchieta'shometown,whereawoodenimageof
himisalsoveneratedintheCathedralofLaLagunaandcarriedin
processionthroughthestreetsevery9June.IntheBasilicaofOurLadyof
Candelaria(patronsaintoftheCanaryIslands),thereisapaintingofJos
deAnchietafoundingthecityofSoPaulo.In1997,abiographicalcomic
waspublished.
