Publication guidelines

The journal Cultura Oriental publishes articles resulting from original research
relating to various cultural aspects of Asian Far East (especially India, China, Japan and
Tibet), including language, religion, literature, philosophy, arts and other subjects, covering
both the current culture and its historical aspects. Its scope does not include, however,
subjects such as economy, trade and politics of the contemporary period.
Only unpublished papers (and not submitted for publication elsewhere) may be
submitted for publication in Cultura Oriental. Submitted papers must be the result of
original research and should represent an effective contribution to the area. All submitted
papers will be sent to the analysis of two referees. In case of divergence between their
opinions, the work will be reviewed by a third referee.
The analysis of submitted papers will take into account: (1) thematic relevance of the
article; (2) compliance with the standards set forth herein; (3) originality and depth of
research; (4) adequate style of the paper.
Submitted papers may be accepted, rejected, or accepted conditionally. The authors have
the right to appeal from the decision if they disagree with it, and in this case a member of
the Editorial Board will be consulted, who will issue a final decision.
Articles in Portuguese, Spanish or English can be accepted and published in Cultura
Oriental. Submitted papers in Portuguese or Spanish should include an abstract in the
original language and an abstract in English. Articles in English must be accompanied by an
abstract in Portuguese, in addition to the English abstract. The abstracts should be about 200
words long. The authors should also provide about five keywords to identify the work.
The articles written by authors whose first language is not English or Spanish, but
written in one of these languages, may require a professional revision before being
published. The reviser will necessarily be a person whose native language is Spanish or
English and who works professionally with proofreading services. The editors of Cultura
Oriental may suggest companies qualified to provide such services.
The journal Cultura Oriental will publish papers of the following types:
1) Research Article: results of original mature research, with a length of up to 9,000
words
2) Review Article: commented analysis of recent work and state of the art of a relevant
topic, made by an experienced researcher, with a length of up to 12,000 words
3) Communication: brief text about some current issue, or partial results of work in
progress, with a length of up to 3,000 words
4) Commented Translation: translation of a relevant text belonging to the Eastern
Culture, which copyright is expired; the translation should be produced from the original
language, and may be accompanied by the original (bilingual edition), with a length of up to
15,000 words (including the original)
5) Book Review: comment about recent relevant publication (not older than four years),
with a length of up to 3,000 words

6) Summary of Thesis or Dissertation: with maximum length of 800 words

In all the above cases, the maximum length includes footnotes and bibliography.
Exceptionally, the editors may accept papers that exceed these limits.
In all cases, it is necessary that at least one of the authors of the submitted paper be a
PhD. Master or Doctorate students, for example, must submit their original only with
permission of their supervisors and co-authored by them. Notice that this is not a mere
formality: the supervisor should carefully review the article before it is submitted.
Manuscripts should be sent in DOC, DOCX or RTF format, and also in PDF format, to
the following email address: cultura.oriental.ufpb@gmail.com. The text should use the
Times New Roman font, except for special characters that cannot be represented using that
font. If an author needs to use special fonts, he/she should choose one of the following
alternatives: (a) send, in addition to his work, the source used (TTF file); or (b) embed the
font in the DOC or DOCX file.
The message forwarding the work submitted for publication must inform the editors that
this is an original and unpublished work being submitted for publication in the journal
Cultura Oriental; and must specify the type of work submitted (research article, review,
etc.).
Illustrations should be provided in the form of high resolution files, presenting crisp
images suitable for reproduction, with 300 pixels per inch (118 pixels per centimeter). We
do not accept low quality images. The illustrations must be accompanied by captions and
should have the indication of their sources. Authors should provide only images which
reproduction is allowed (for example, those in the public domain).
In the printed version of the journal, all illustrations will be published in black and white
(and shades of gray), therefore all the color images that are submitted will be converted for
publication. In the electronic version, color illustrations can be included; they should also be
of high resolution.
References should appear in a list placed at the end of the article, in alphabetical and
chronological order. They should be complete containing, for example, the first and last
pages of articles and book chapters, the names of translators of books, city and publisher of
book, etc. Whenever possible, the authors' names must be provided in full and not with the
use of initials. Journal titles should be provided in full and not abbreviated. See some
examples below:

Wilson Trace and Marianna Woods. Boston: Institute of Tibetan Studies, 1986.

Footnotes should be used only for comments, not to provide references. Within the text,
references should be cited in parentheses, with the surname of the author(s), year of
publication, volume (if applicable) and pages. For example: (Doe, 2007, p. 35), (Martin &
Knight, 1985, v. 3, p. 128). Whenever appropriate, the author's last name will appear outside
the parentheses, as in the following example: "According to the analysis of John Doe (2007,
p. 35) ...".
Short quotations should be placed between quotation marks, no italics, within the text
itself. Long quotations (more than 3 lines) must be placed without quotation marks and no
italics in an separated paragraph with left indent 1.5 cm, leaving one blank line before and
one after the quote.
Authors who do not follow closely the editorial instructions of Cultura Oriental will
be asked to adjust their papers, once accepted, to the journal's guidelines and to provide
additional bibliographic information, if applicable. This may result in delays in publishing
the article.
The submission of a paper for publication in Cultura Oriental implies the transfer of
the publication rights to the journal, if the paper is accepted. The articles published in this
journal may not be republished in books or periodicals without formal authorization from
the Editors.
