Positive Social Change1 is the words that provoked my actions in pursuing a

doctoral degree. I have not come across these words from any Universities. I feel that when one
pursues a doctoral degree, it is not just to get a better job but the impact of such this level of
academic achievement has to impact society at large. Along with Waldens vision, mission and
outcomes,2 they are compatible to my goals, my studies and best of all, becoming a scholarpractitioner who effects social change.
My goal in pursuing a Ph.D in Education with specialization in Special Education is to be
able to apply my knowledge to other children and their family, who can benefit from it and take
part in making quality of special education better so that these children, to the best they can,
would be able to function independently when they are adults. In addition, under the realms of
Special Education, I am also interested in researching on the effectiveness of gifted programs and
the goal is also to be able to participate in making the gifted and talented programs in schools
challenging to children while taking them through the transition of adulthood.
I have been working as a Tutor/Therapist with children diagnosed under the
autism spectrum since August 2008. I feel that I could contribute more to the field if I have a
doctoral degree. My work involves applying the behavior analysis science to children of special
needs and currently there are not many research and materials on its application for older
children. I feel that the older children are at times neglected and intervention opportunities for
3
older children should be pursued equally and as intensive as early intervention is advocated for
young children with disabilities.
Ultimately as a scholar practitioner, I intend to form a non-profit organization to provide
intensive behavioral intervention to children with developmental delays, whose parents are not
able to fund these treatments by themselves or do not have insurance coverage for such
treatments. I believe in sharing knowledge and information to all for the betterment of the world.
