Practical Applications of Google Classroom: Analysis

Summary of Course:
This course is an introduction to utilizing Google Classroom as a learning management
system in a 3rd through 5th grade classroom. The students in this course will be learning
the basic functions of Google Applications for Education (GAFE) as well as the various
unique functions of Google Classroom.
Performance/Needs Assessment:
This course is needed because technology integration in general has not been effective in
the 3rd-5th grade classrooms. Teachers are currently utilizing skill and drill programs but
have not adapted their instruction to include the meaningful use of educational
technology. Teachers are in need of explicit instruction in specific tools and strategies for
integrating said technology.
Purpose Statement:
This course will serve to instruct educators in the best practices for integrating Google
Classroom and other Google tools into a 3rd-5th grade classroom.
Instructional Goals:
Learners will create their own Google Classroom to integrate into their current
classroom.
Learners will create products using Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and Google
Forms in conjunction with Google Classroom.
Learner Analysis:

3rd-5th grade teachers (referred to as learners or students)

15-30 Students
Minimal to intermediate computer skills needed (familiarity with basic computer
and internet functions necessary)
Students will need to be open to new techniques and willing to learn

Applications of Google Classroom

EDTC 5753

Required Resources:

30 computers
projector
projector screen
conference room/computer lab
Internet access
Google-ready accounts with access to Google Classroom

Delivery System:
This course will be given in a face to face setting. This is due mainly to the fact that there
will be a need to help individual students as they navigate through the different tools of
the system. It could be adapted to be a blended or self-paced course depending on the
technology background of the learner.

Project management:
This course could be given in a full-day (8hr) professional development, or spread out
over shorter sessions on multiple days., depending on time constraints and budget
limitations. Since this course relies heavily on technology, internet connection problems
could create a scenario where hands-on learning would be impossible. It would be
recommended that the instructor have back-up tutorial videos that could be viewed in
the event of internet issues. The budget for this course would depend entirely on what
the district has already provided. Basic costs would include the computers the teachers
will be trained on, the devices their students will use, and internet access fees.

learning platform. Students should be given time to explore, make mistakes and ask
questions. The instructor should move throughout the classroom to assist with
troubleshooting issues.

This course should be piloted before implementing it. This could be done by testing out
each aspect of the sample Google Classroom to locate any errors and to anticipate any
problems. The instructor could test this by creating a student account and navigating
themselves, or a sample set of students could be used.
As the instructor is implementing this course, frequently asked questions should arise
and through repeated courses, the questions can be anticipated.

Practical Applications of Google Classroom: Implementation

1. Who will be teaching the course?

Teaching this course will be a K-5 teacher or technology coach. They should have
some familiarity with GAFE (Google Applications for Education) as well as
familiarity of the reasonable expectations for 3rd-5th grade students.

2. What kind of support will be available to instructors while the course is underway?

While the course is underway, the instructor will have the following tools available:

How to: tutorial videos for basic functions of GAFE

Diagrams explaining the different functions of GAFE buttons (share, new,
undo, etc.)
Troubleshooting documents
Login information for learners
Back up videos for explanation in case of internet issues

3. How will you deal with unexpected problems that occur during implementation?

The instructor will have support tools available to assist with potential problems
that occur. The major issue that could occur would be connectivity issues. This could
be solved with some pre-made videos demonstrating the skills

4. How will you manage changes (e.g., immediate bug-fixes versus improvements to
make for the future, etc.)

Immediate fixes should be able to be remedied by utilizing the support tools
provided for the instructor. Improvement for the course as a whole could be
completed after feedback from the learner population with an exit survey.

5. Can you think of any other implementation issues not listed above that you may
have to address?

GAFE may encounter regular updates and changes during future implementations.
Help tools would need to be adjusted to reflect these changes.

Practical Applications of Google Classroom: Evaluation

Level 1 Perception (to determine degree of satisfaction with the content and with
the teacher)
a. Who will administer the evaluation? (Personnel)
i. The instructor will administer the evaluation to the students.
b. What will specifically be measured? (Type of Data)
i. Students will be given a Likert scale to measure instructor
effectiveness and perceived course usefulness using objective
statements.
1. = strongly disagree
2. = disagree
3. = undecided
4. = agree
5. = strongly agree
c. When will the evaluation be administered? (Timing)
i. The evaluation will be administered throughout the course at the
completion of each module.
d. Where will the evaluation occur? (Venue)
i. The evaluation will be given via Google Forms and will be
completed in the same environment that the course is given.
e. Why is this evaluation important? (Purpose)
i. This evaluation is important because the instructor can make
frequent changes to instruction based on feedback from the
students.
f. How will the evaluation data be collected? (Tools)
i. Data will be collected using Google Forms. After the students have
completed the Google Form, the data will automatically be sent to
Google Sheets and can be analyzed by the instructor immediately.
Level 2 Learning (to measure knowledge and skill acquisition)
a. Who will administer the evaluation? (Personnel)
i. The instructor will administer the evaluation to the students.
b. What will specifically be measured? (Type of Data)
i. Students will be required to complete specific tasks for each
module. This will be measuring whether or not they understand
the process of using Google Classroom. This evaluation will be
pass/fail.
c. When will the evaluation be administered? (Timing)

Applications of Google Classroom

Laura Smith
EDTC 5753

i. The evaluation will be given throughout the course. Each module

will have a task that needs to be completed to measure basic
understand of the tool being taught.
d. Where will the evaluation occur? (Venue)
i. The evaluation will be given in the classroom through the use of
Google Classroom.
e. Why is this evaluation important? (Purpose)
i. This evaluation is important for the instructor to know which
tasks should be reviewed before moving on to more difficult tasks.
f. How will the evaluation data be collected? (Tools)
i. The data will be collected through observations of the tasks. The
instructor will match the roster with the submissions from the
students to see who still needs assistance with the task and which
students have completed the task successfully based on a rubric
grading scale.
Level 3 Performance (to determine students ability to perform task with genuine
consequences and judge whether the performance gap has been closed)
a. Who will administer the evaluation? (Personnel)
i. The instructor will administer the evaluation to the students.
b. What will specifically be measured? (Type of Data)
i. Students will be evaluated on a rubric scale to determine their
understanding of the practical applications of Google Classroom
through a final project.
c. When will the evaluation be administered? (Timing)
i. The evaluation will be given at the end of the course.
d. Where will the evaluation occur? (Venue)
i. The evaluation will be given during the final course session in the
same location of the rest of the course. The students will be
creating an online product.
e. Why is this evaluation important? (Purpose)
i. This evaluation is important because students will be
demonstrating the practical applications of Google Classroom.
f. How will the evaluation data be collected? (Tools)
i. The students will be evaluated using a rubric scale so that the
instructor can evaluate how well the course was taught and the
information transferred to the students.
