Inferring the meaning of compound words with Scientific terms

Compound words are two or more words combined to make one new word. By knowing t
he definition of the words in a compound word, you can already figure out the me
aning of the compound.
This short lesson will help familiarize you with Scientific terms that are commo
nly used in compound words. Knowing what these terms mean will allow you to unde
rstand compound words they appear in.

FIELDS
If you see a terms referring to a scientific field, try to remember the elements
being studied in that field.
astro : stars or outer space
astrodome : a dome building designed to look space-like
bio : life or body (humans and animals)
bioengineering : building life or the body
geo : Earth or soil
geotagging : tagging or identifying objects on Earth (or on a map)
hydro : water
hydroelectric : harnessing electricity from water
PHYSICS
Physics is the study of matter, and the field has terms which are used to descri
be objects physically.
macro : big
macropolitics : large-scale politics
micro : small
microorganism : a small organism
nano : very small
nanoparticle : a very small particle
quasi : as if or almost
quasireligious : as if religious in nature
sub : below
subatom : below the size of an atom
PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology has terms that can be used to describe abstract concepts.

metaphysics : beyond the physical world
phobia : fear
claustrophobia : fear of enclosed spaces
philia : love
francophilia : love of things related to French culture or France
