1) Which one of the Bus, Ring, Star and Mesh topologies of computer networks should be
advantageous in the following scenarios?
i. The network is sensitive to collisions. The collisions should be avoided completely.
ii. The computing facilities connected (e.g. PCs) are highly prone to failures.
iii. The medium chosen is unreliable, failures in the cable infrastructures are experienced
quite often.
iv. Regardless of the number of users and the cost of infrastructure the best performance
and highest reliability are expected.
Answer this question with aid of your own diagrams and explanations.

2) If you were to transfer a packet of size X, and you have a highly reliable medium for transfer,
would you consider individual acknowledgements for each frame? Explain with your
reasoning.

3) Imagine that you have purchased a new car to go to Nicosia. In the car you carry ten singlesided, double-layer (8 GB) DVDs. The distance between the METU NCC campus and your
destination in Nicosia is 30 km. At which speed do you need to drive to have a higher data
rate than a transmission line whose data rate (excluding overhead) is 160 Mbps?

4) Compare each layer of OSI and TCP/IP protocol stacks. Specify which layer in TCP IP has
the corresponding operations of OSI.
