I spoke with Sam about her educational interests going forward as a student at the University of Washington in the Interdisciplinary Honors Program. Her intended major is Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies along with a dual major in Medical Anthropology and Global Health. These majors interest her because they meet her passion of advancing the access and quality of womens healthcare and childrens rights. She believes she can best address these issues by studying the intersection of public policy and public health. Sam has many experiential learning opportunities in her intended areas of study. First, she has opportunities for research in both the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies department as well as the Anthropology department. The anthropology department, for example, offers specific honors research opportunities for undergraduates who are a part of its departmental honors program. Second, Sam can take part in international engagement by studying abroad, something she very much wants to do. Both the department of anthropology and the interdisciplinary honors program offer unique and program specific study abroad opportunities for their students. Third, Sam can meet her service requirements by volunteering for a nonprofit which correlates to her intended field; I recommend she consider volunteering with nonprofits such as Planned Parenthood and UNICEF, two organizations which deal with issues of womens health and childrens rights.
