Short Assignment #3
The texts I will be talking about are three different pages from the SCP wiki. The SCP
Foundation is a collaborative writing project undertaken by people all over the world. The idea is
that there is a foundation call the SCP foundation (Secure, Contain, Protect) that finds and
contains these anomalous objects. These are notated by the abbreviation SCP followed by a
number, sub objects with further numbers, such as SCP-055, a creature or object which erases
any mental or recorded notes about itself. These objects can be anything from something that
could be the monster of a horror movie to something thats a complete joke (usually notated as a
j object). I will be looking at SCP-173, SCP-1981, and SCP-504. The purpose of these texts is
to entertain and inspire. Everything on the Wiki is open source, so anyone can use anything from
it in anything.
The people who make these kinds of texts are creative people who like writing interesting
stuff. The people who read this stuff are the kinds of people who like horror movies, or just want
to be entertained by interesting stories about anomalies.
All the articles on the wiki are organized in the same way. They start with an identification
number for the object, followed by a classification of how safe it is, containment procedures for
the anomaly, how it was found, a description of the object, and finally specific things relating to
the object itself, like exerpts from a video, responses from a living subject, test results, etc.
The style of voice is almost always formal, only breaking the facade in the specific excerpts,
or in the occasional joke article. The intention behind all of them is that they would be written by
scientists or researchers who are looking at them objectively, the only time they arent formal is
in dialogue and joke articles.
The articles are about anomalous objects held by the Foundation. SCP-173 is called The
Sculpture, its a creature made of cement, rebar, and spray paint that works much like a weeping

angel from the show Doctor Who; it can only move when not observed, but does so at
incalculable speeds, and breaks the neck of anyone it comes across. SCP-1981 is called Ronald
Reagan cut up while speaking, and its a recording of a speech of Ronald Reagan, but begins to
deviate every time around 1:10 into speaking. He receives physical laceration from an unknown
source, and his speeches are about grotesque topics. Occasionally another figure, wearing a black
robe with a dark pointed hood, is visible, classified SCP-1981-1. SCP-504 is a tomato plant
whose tomatoes hurl themselves at someone who makes a bad joke. The following is an exerpt
from the page itself;
Item: One mature SCP-504 tomato
Subject: D-504-3
Spoken: "So, I was going to bed, and my brother told me, 'Goodnight! Don't let the bedbugs
stick their proboscis in your skin and suck your blood!'" *pause* "Good luck on a healthy
dermis!"
Result: Two-second pause before activity. Tomato clocked at [REDACTED]. Sound barrier
broken. Subject killed.
