Need for Achievement (High Motivation)

To do well, to succeed, and to avoid failure


People with high achievement motivation tend to chose
difficult tasks.
They enjoy being challenged and take pleasure in
accomplishing a difficult task, but are often motivated
to avoid failure.
Work more persistently than others
Take more pride in their accomplishments when they
succeed.

They also tend to attribute their past their past


successes to their abilities and their past failures to
forces beyond their control, which increases confidence
a persistence in the face of adverse feedback.
A student with a high achievement level is likely to
select a major that suits his/her ability.

Components of Achievement/Three Motives

Only motivated for their domain and will be undisturbed


by failures of others!
Performance Goals
Motives to achieve at a particular level
Performance-approach goals
Performance goals that are centered on approaching or
attaining a standard
Performance-avoidance goals
Performance goals centered less on achieving
A high standard than on avoiding failure.

Parenting Culture and Achievement


Numerous studies have shown that the need for achievement is
a learned motive.
Ex: Children w/ high achievement motivation have parents who
encourage them to attempt new skills and praise the outcome
