Notes for Civil War

1. What started the war?


Different belief-systems and economy had caused a rift between the
northern and southern states. The northern states wanted to abolish
slavery, but the southern states protested and started a civil war.
2. Who was pro-slavery and who was against
The north states were against slavery, while the south states were proslavery.
3. Which party did Abraham Lincoln represent?
The republicans.
4. Why did some states want to leave the Union?
To protect their rights to have slaves.
5. What was the new Southern Union called and when was it formed?
The original Confederate cabinet
6. When and where did the war begin?
April 12th, 1861, Fort Sumter (South Carolina)
7. How many states were in each union?
11 confederate states and 23 union states.
8. What is the Emancipation declaration?
A document that declared freedom for all slaves.
9. When was the Battle of Gettysburg?
July 1863.

April 9th 1864.

President Lincoln was shot by a confederate sympathizer.

What did President Ulysses S. Grant fight for?
He tried to free slaves, dealt with the kkk, the panic in 1873 and the
financial depression.

What were the Jim Crow laws? (Google it)

State and local laws, enforcing the segregation in the south states. They
were used in public facilities with the motto separate but equal. For
instance, public bathrooms were separated into whites and colored only.
