1. Describe Steinbecks reasoning setting out to travel across America.

Use textual
evidence to support your answer

Steinbeck's reasoning setting out to travel across America is to learn more about
America. He was an American writer, but he didnt know about much about America.
I had not heard the speech of America, smelled the grass and trees and sewage,
seen its hills and water, its color and quality of light. I knew the changes only from
the books and newspapers. But more than this, I had not felt the country for
twenty- five years.; This quote prove that he never feel the real America. He able
to write the book about it because he knew some information about from books or
newspapers. In my opinion, another reason that make him decide to travel is
because he doesnt want to be a criminal. He think that writing something that he
didnt surely knew about it is a criminal; In short, I was writing of something I did
not know about, and it seems to me that in a so- called writer this is criminal.
Lastly, I think Steinbeck want to make his get into real America, so he decided to
travel.

2. How does Steinbecks travelogue relate to Catcher in the Rye so far? Are there any
similarities between Steinbeck and Holden

In my opinion, Steinbeck's travelogue can relate with Catcher in the Rye because it
is about traveling. It is relate with Holdens travelogue. Holden left the Pencey Prep
and travel to New York by himself. On the other hand, Steinbeck left his house to
travel across America with his dog. Steinbeck didn't travel alone, but he is the
same as Holden because he think that he was alone.; It is some year since I have
been alone, nameless, friendless, without any of the safety one gets from family,
friends, and accomplices. This quote shows that Steinbeck is also not much in the
society same as Holden. In my opinion, Steinbeck can be said as isolation. They
spoke quietly of how they wanted to go someday, to move about, free and
unanchored, not toward something, but away from something; This quote shows
that other people also want to left where they belong. They want to be like
Steinbeck, where he got to go out and find his own place same as Holden. He got to
go out and find where he belong and his own society. Lastly, Holden and Steinbeck is
similar because both of them travel with some reason.

3. How does Steinbecks travelogue differ from the Beatniks, and why might it not
be considered a beat generation novel?

Steinbeck's travelogue is not considered a beat generation novel because the tone
of the book. The book is about explore the America which is the same as other book
that considered as a beat generation, such as On the Road. However, what make it
different is because the book that consider as beat generation is not only about
explore the America, but the book must be non conformist. Moreover, it should be
censored and banned, mature subject matter, and honest use of language. Travel
with Charley is not censored and banned. The language it use it also not bad. Lastly,
Steinbecks travelogue differ from the Beatniks because of the different style in
writing.

5. How does Steinbeck describe American so far? What is the Speech of America,
and how does Steinbeck communicate it through his travelogue?

Steinbeck didn't describe anything about American so far because he didnt knew
anything about it; Thus, I discovered that I did not know my own country. He knew
some information like how does country change from the books and newspapers, but
he never experienced it. Speech of America is like experience in America. I had
not heard the speech of America, smelled the grass and trees and sewage, seen its
hills and water, its color and quality of light.; This quote shows that he had not
hear speech of America ean that he never experience the real America. Steinbeck
communicate it through his travelogue by act like he was writing diary. He told what
happen to him and what he thought; I thought I might do some writing along the
way, perhaps essay, surely notes, and certainly letters.
