Group 3: Comparison Between College Students with or Without Jobs

For our final project, we choose the topic of college students with or without a job, and
how that can impact Grade Point Average. To find our results we made a survey using Google
Forms and within our survey we included a few questions. The first question we asked was
What is your employment status?. The Second question we choose to ask was What is your
grade level?. The third question we imputed into our survey was, How many hours per week
are you employed?. The fourth question we choose for our survey was How often do you fail
to turn in an assignment on time?. The last and final question we choose was How do you
manage your time with your assignments and/or work?. We received 100 responses to our
survey. These results and the questions assisted our group to find the answer to our main
research question: Does employment affect Grade Point Average?
When comparing the average amount of credits each class takes within a semester we
notice that the Freshman class has the highest credit average with an average of 15.0 credits. This
can be likely because we had 15 out of 100 freshman students respond to our survey. We believe
that the Freshman class had the highest credit average because, most freshman are full time
students and they are barely starting their education unlike the Senior class who is taking their
last requirements in order to graduate. The second highest credit average can be seen in the
Sophomore class with average credit of a little over 14.0. We received a total of 46 responses
from the Sophomore class. These result can also be because in the first two years of college
students are taking general classes and prerequisites. From the junior class the average credits
taken where a little under 14.0 credits. From the Junior class we received a total of 34 responses.
Lastly the Senior class had an average credit amount of 13.0. From the senior class we received a
total of 5 responses. Our responses are varied because we had different amounts of each class
respond.

According to the chart, 14 out of 100 students were freshmen. When comparing their
employment status to their GPA, six freshmen students without employment have a 3.20 GPA
compared to one freshman student with a full-time job. As to those with a part-time employment,
seven freshmen students were ten points behind those without employment. Compared to all four
classes, sophomores with part-time employment and no employment have low GPA below 3.12
and above 2.86. Sophomore students with full-time employment also have a GPA above 2.86. 34
Junior students out of 100 class overall have high GPA whether theyre employed or not. Nine
students with no employment have the second highest GPA above 3.12 compared to freshman
students without employment. Eight students with a full-time employment have the highest
GPA; almost 3.38 out of all classes with full-time employment. As to the senior class, only one
senior earned a 3.0 GPA. Three senior students with part-time employment have a 3.38 GPA;

which is the highest overall. Since seniors are nearly done with their completion in college,
theyre likely to get a high GPA.

Our results showed that seniors work the most. Of the seniors that took our survey, 60%
work full time, and 40% work part time. However, are sample size being too small to draw any
conclusions because only five seniors responded to our survey. The lowest group of
employment was freshmen, of which only 7% work full time, and a whopping 40% are
unemployed. 53% work part time. However only 15 freshmen responded to our survey, so while
this number is more reliable than the number of seniors, it is still a small sample size.
Sophomores were the largest group to respond to our survey. 59% of our sophomores work part
time, and 13% work full time. The other 28% don't have a job. Juniors had the second highest
response rate. 50% of the juniors work part time, 24% full time, and 26% dont work.

After all our results came in, we concluded that part-time employment is correlated with
a higher grade point average. Throughout all the class levels we noticed that those students who
hold a part-time employment seem to have a higher grade point average. Some other questions
that come to mind related to our topic are, Why does part-time employment correlate with a
higher grade point average? also What are those students who hold a part-time employment
doing to maintain a higher grade point average? and Is your employment on campus or off?.
These questions would help our research to better understand our results. If we were to do this
again we would change our survey options to multiple choice only because, when we added the
option of other or written responses that made our data a little more difficult to read.
