CREATIVE WRITING

HOME FOR
THE HOLIDAYS
By J E NNY ST E R N

I asked a group of people to tell me

the first thing they thought of upon
hearing the word family.
Responses included: home, love,
acceptance, kids, food, fun, laughter,
support, comfort, siblings, warmth,
foundation, purpose, resilient.
I asked a group of people to tell me
the first the thing they thought of upon
hearing the word holidays.
Responses included: Christmas,
family, food, giving, baby Jesus,
tradition, blessings, Santa, nostalgia,
love, snow, magic.
Hmm. Lovely, huh? So, why is it that
when we combine these two words, and

think of family during the holidays,

thoughts tend to shift toward: stress,
Hell, dysfunction, alcohol, guilt,
complications, discomfort. How do
love and warmth so quickly morph
into tension and awkwardness. Why
do The Holidays where family is
concerned leave such a bitter taste in
most mouths? No, thats not just the
residue left behind from your chemicallaced Pumpkin Spiced Latte.
My theory? Lies. Lying is stressful.
Lying is uncomfortable, complicated and
can lead to feelings of guilt and craving
escape. How do we stop the madness?
Cut stress by living your truth.
Heres a personal tidbit: I kinda hate
turkey. Maybe hate is a bit harsh.
Turkey is not my fave Ill eat it on a
sandwich every once in a while (viva Le
Gobbler), but thats about it. Refusing
turkey on Thanksgiving? Unacceptable!
Whats wrong with you? After mom just
slaved over this bird for 12 hours? How
can you justignore it?
For years and years, I choked down
turkey holiday after holiday, leaving the
table just not getting what the big deal
was, and eventually not looking forward
to Thanksgiving. After my daughters
were born, due to work, we spent a
Thanksgiving away from home. I decided
to take the opportunity to live my truth.
I invited co-workers over, and I made an
herb-crusted pork loin (think crunchy
stuffing atop the other white meat).
Delish. Everyone loved it. No one died,
including the turkey. Cooking time: 45
minutes versus 10 hours. A no brainer.
So, the next year, I was back home
and suggested the pork option to my
mom. She agreed. I made the pork
loin in addition to her turkey. Again,
everyone loved it. As the years passed,

1 0 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / D E C E M B E R 2016 J A N U A R Y 2017

CREATIVE WRITING

the loin began to reign supreme. Result:

people eat what they actually want to
eat and mom doesnt waste her entire
day with her head in the oven (literally
and figuratively). Win to the win-win.
Hate turkey? Low on funds? Aunt
Joyces perfume making you gag?
Overwhelmed by travel?
What if you said:
I dont love turkey; mind if I bring
a lasagna this year?
I cant afford presents for everyone
this time. Anyone interested in
a Pollyanna, or just skip the gifts
this year?
Im allergic to your perfume, and
Ive been high on Benadryl every
Christmas because of it.
Can we have Thanksgiving at our
house this year?
How about we bring the wine
this year?
I am almost certain the only things
you will hear are, Of course! Sure!
Absolutely!
But what if its bigger? The real
stress. Not the petty stuff. Racism.
Abuse. Discrimination?
Then dont go. Take a year off,
and make people miss you. If your
grandmother has a problem with you
being gay and bringing your partner
to dinner, dont go. If your gross
uncle has an issue with your Haitian
fianc, dont go. Stay home and watch
The Grinch or Love, Actually and
snuggle up to the people you really
want to spend your time with, and
eat Chinese food or pork loin or pasta
and enjoy the holidays for what you
said they should be. And what they
are family, food, nostalgia, magic,
blessings, love. Traditions can begin
at any time. Any year.
radiusmag.com

Heres another word to ponder:

miracle.
The oil, only enough for one night,
that burns for eight.
An overweight, elderly Dutch man
led by flying hooved beasts being
able to make the dreams of 1.9 billion
come true in one night.
You, mustering the ability to survive
48 hours with your Green Party aunt,
Tea Party brother, and your vegan
niece, all fueled by Drambuie and
resentment, yelling over that slimy
green bean disaster.
You will get through it. You will.
Your choices are: 1) Dont go, 2) Speak
up cut your stress by speaking (and
living) your truth, 3) Or maybe my fave:
Stop. Breathe. And get over it. There
are wonderful things all around you.
Twinkling lights, crisp air, squealing
children, mulled wine, belly laughs,
music, wonder. Or, in your own words:
home, love, acceptance, warmth, purpose,
fun, magic, and blessings.
This year, I find myself home for
the holidays. Permanently. Life doesnt
always go the way you expect or plan.
I am now alone with my two young
daughters in our little brick house in
the country so far away from our big
brownstone in the city. A clean slate.
A fresh powder of possibilities. A time
and place to cultivate new traditions.
I will speak my truth: It is scary.
It is sad. It is overwhelming. It is unfair.
There. I said it. You know what else?
It is beautiful. It is magical. It is joyful.
Because I choose it to be. It is mine.
And I will treasure every second and
every twinkle light like its my last.
God Bless and Happy Holidays. | r

TEST DRIVE

TEST DRIVE

Maserati Ghibli
S Q4 2017
As a car enthusiast and endurance
race car driver, Ive driven high
performance German-engineered cars
from Audis and BMWs to Mercedes
and Porsches. But when the kind folks
at Thompson Maserati of Doylestown
offered me the chance to take the
beautiful, curvy Italian out for a spin,
it was an offer I couldnt refuse.
Even the cars name the 2017
Maserati Ghibli S Q4 is cloaked in
speed and mystery. Ghibli (pronounced
ghee-blee) is an Italian word used
to describe the hot, fast desert winds
of the African Sahara. So it stands
to reason that this hot Italian sports
sedan not only handles like a breeze,
but its also the perfect pairing of luxury
and performance.
The exterior exemplifies that notion
with a low, sleek hood that flows to an
elegantly sporty roof silhouette, with

the unmistakable Maserati grill and

its prominent trident set in the center.
Opening the door, one instantly notices
the fine leather craftsmanship, from
the seats to the steering wheel.
I was pleasantly surprised by the
roomy interior with seating for five.
The all-electric front seat adjusts
quickly and sets you in place to
control the hefty 404 foot-pounds
of horsepower available from the
3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine.
With a push of the button, the engine
comes to life. In the ICE (Increased
Control & Efficiency) mode, the Ghibli
rides nimbly, with an audible exhaust
note much like a low steady purr. And it
shifts effortlessly through the eight-speed
ZF automatic transmission. Switching
to the sport mode, one instantly hears
the report of the exhaust note build
from a purr to a more imposing growl.

The transmission shifts firmly, as all

406 pounds of torque are fully available
for your right foot to control.
Shift the transmission to manual
mode, and now you control those shift
points with well-placed paddle shifters
and a flick of your fingers. Much like
the fast Sahara wind, the Ghibli moves
swiftly down the open road. The large,
prominent speedometer and tachometer
clearly track your increasing speed,
while the intelligent all-wheel drive
system adds stability.
Between the sound of the exhaust
and the low-inertia twin turbos adding
boost, it was hard for my brain to get
my right foot to ease up. And thats
exactly why the Ghibli will be right
at home on a weekend road trip to
exciting new places, or a track day
where one can work on lap times
(minus the speeding tickets). | r

JERSEY PUNK
LEGENDS THE
BOUNCING
SOULS KEEP
THEIR EDGE
WHILE STAYING
TRUE TO
THEIR ROOTS
By C HA R LIE SA HN E R
The Bouncing Souls passed the
quarter century mark a couple
of years ago, but through all the
twists and turns since their early
days in Basking Ridge, N.J., the
punk rockers have kept evolving,
while keeping the best of their
hard-hitting original sound.

We all grew up in the same small

town in New Jersey, and then moved
to New Brunswick out of high school
into our first punk house together,
recalls bassist Bryan Kienlen. We tried
to get gigs, but not much in the way of
venues, so we threw parties and played
at them instead.
1 8 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / D E C E M B E R 2016 J A N U A R Y 2017

radiusmag.com

The boys were more interested

in New Brunswicks burgeoning
underground music scene in the
early 1990s than anything to do
with Rutgers University, and quickly
drew a following while opening up
for other local bands.

19

MUSIC

We skated all night long and drank

40s and lived on practically no money,
remembers Kienlen. But we were
always stoked, and worked our asses
off, with the single collective focus of
writing music and turning people on to
our band.
Some of the Bouncing Souls
contemporaries include Operation Ivy,
Face to Face, Millencoin, Screeching
Weasel, and street Dogs. The bands
sound has often been described as
pogo or pop punk, but neither is
entirely accurate. The band continues
to reflect the influence of the iconic
punk rockers of their youth.
Most of those bands remain the
fuel in our tanks of inspiration, said
Kienlen. Bands like The Damned, Bad
Brains, Descendents, Angry Samoans,
Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Circle
Jerks, and the Ramones. It was all just
punk rock hardcore, and we took what
we liked, and when we wrote from the
heart, it had our own special sound.
We let the music be whatever it was
meant to be when it came out, Kienlen

continued. I personally loved pogo

and also thrash because I was a spaz,
and the faster or more energetic, the
better. But I also always loved sweet,
soft music too, and I believe both
of these extremes influenced all of
us as songwriters.
As a bassist, Kienlens brisk,
aggressive style stands out.
I think its reflective of my personality,
he said. Im very animated in person,
and I think its just how it all shakes out.
The Bouncing Souls released their
first album, The Good, the Bad &
the Argyle, on their own Chunksahh
Records label in 1994, and their next
full-length work, Maniacal Laughter,
in 1996. The group signed on with
Epitaph Records in 1997, publishing
The Bouncing Souls, and in 1999
produced the acclaimed Hopeless
Romantic. The album was well received,
with accolades at the time for its charged
lyrics and rapid pace.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation
followed in 2001, Anchors Aweigh
in 2003, The Gold Record in 2006,

Ghosts on the Boardwalk in 2010, and

2012s Comet.
Renowned drummer George Rebelo
signed on to the band in 2013, replacing
drummer Michael McDermott, and
joining Kienlen, guitarist Pete Steinkopf,
and vocalist George Attonito. On July
29, 2016, the Bouncing Souls released
their tenth album, Simplicity, and
theyre clearly happy with the results.
I feel that this is one of the really
good ones, it came together effortlessly
and under great positive and fresh
energy and that shines through when
you listen, observed Kienlen.
Fans seem to agree, with the albums
driving, fast-tempo, punk-roots style,
Attonitos powerful vocals, and
insightful social commentary.
Pete, Greg and I write the lyrics, and
most of the riffs and chord progressions
are written by Pete and I, then fleshed
out together with George, who really
brings a lot to the finished song, said
Kienlen of the bands creative process.
Its always been written from
personal perspective and experience,
he continued. It hasnt changed much,
but is always changing a bit, as we go
through life and have new experiences
So, where do the Bouncing Souls go
from here?
Were at a point where were
perfectly content with where the band
is and do everything strictly for the love
of doing it, said Kienlen.
And thats a beautiful thing. | r

The American Myth is

Alive and Well and Ready
to Take on the World
By CH AR L I E SAH N E R
From left to right: Travis McKayle, Chris Slaughter, Andrew Shermeta. Photo by Jon Biddle.

You may not have heard of Lehigh

Valley-based three-piece punk rock
band The American Myth. Theyre just
under the radar right now. But 2017
is shaping up as the year they start
getting noticed in a much bigger way.
The band was formed in 2010 by
Andrew Shermeta, who plays bass and
does vocals.
Each of us has different musical
influences, but we can definitely agree
on the Bouncing Souls, NoFx, the Street
Dogs, Green Day, Rancid, Catch 22,
The Briggs, and the Beatles, he said.
Like many of their contemporaries,
the band doesnt want to be shoehorned
into any punk sub-genre, but admits
that characterizations like pop punk,
ska punk, and reggae punk are not
far from the mark.
The music is fun, fast-paced, catchy,
and politically motivated, because

although we like to have fun, we do care

about what is going on in the world,
explained Shermeta.
I saw MxPx at a free concert in
Pottstown, Pa., and it blew my mind,
recalls The American Myth guitarist/
vocalist Travis McKayle of his initial
inspiration to become a professional
musician. I had to play punk rock.
Andrew used to be in a band with
a similar style to MxPx and the
Bouncing Souls, so when he called
me to get a band together, it was
pretty much a sealed deal.
I feel like my drumming is its own
style and I play with a lot of emotion,
observed band member Chris
Slaughter. I play a Tama Starclassic
kit with an Iron Cobra kick pedal,
Sabian AAX crashes, Sabian Ozone
China, Zildjian Z Custom hi-hats
and an A Custom ride, he replied

when asked about his instrument

preferences. I will forever play
Promark sticks, he added.
What mainly motivates me to make
music is speaking out against all of
these artificial dividing lines that have
been created amongst us racism,
sexism, wars, government secrets,
homophobia, Shermeta said. We are
all the same. We are all humans.
Whats next for the boys?
We just finished recording our new
record Getting the Shaft with Pete
Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls, one
our musical heroes, said Shermeta.
We will be releasing on Jan. 2, 2017,
and then start touring all over the
U.S. in support of the new record.
Next year is going to be sick,
continued Shermeta. If you havent
heard about us before, you certainly
will after 2017. | r

A CLOSER LOOK

Seeing Italo Romano skate changed

Christian Hunsbergers life.
Hunsberger, a Doylestown native,
had been making skate and snowboard
films for 18 years. He had filmed in
skate parks and mountains all over the
United States and in South America.
He started filming as a teenager,
using a camera he borrowed from
his parents. Hunsberger was hooked,
and eventually bought his own camera,
and filmed whenever he could. With
little professional training, he taught
himself the best angles and effects
for capturing the staccato energy of
skaters in action. But he also drew on
his experience growing up with two
hard-working parents to push him
through the long hours of editing to
meet deadlines for publication.
The skating scene in the late
1990s was rewarding for a guy like
radiusmag.com

Hunsberger hungry, adventurous and

skilled. This was before YouTube and
corporate sponsorship took over the
scene, so he could walk into the show
with his camera, film for hours to get
the right shots, quickly edit his material
overnight, and sell to skateboarding
magazines the next day. It was not
glamorous, and nobody was getting
rich, but it was what he loved.
Hunsbergers dedication to the
scene brought him to skate parks
in Philadelphia, New York and New
Jersey, as well as California, Arizona
and Tampa. But it was meeting Romano
in Brazil that changed everything.
Although Hunsberger was already
deeply passionate about skating,
Romano inspired him well beyond
anything he had experienced before.
I mean, how could he not be
an inspiration, he is a professional

skateboarder with no legs, and still

pulls off most of the same maneuvers
as the others, explained Hunsberger.
Every day he wakes up, smiles, and
embraces the day.
Tragedy struck Romano as a young
teenager in Brazil, when he and some
friends were horsing around one day
on a moving train. He jumped to the
roof to surf the train, but wound up
falling beneath its wheels, losing both
of his legs. After his recovery, Romano
was given a skateboard as a way to get
around the neighborhood. Instead
of despairing, he saw an opportunity,
and trained to become an international
skateboarding star. He has been a fixture
at major skating events, including
the legendary Tampa Pro, where he
competed in the semi-finals in 2012.
In 2013, Hunsberger began working
with Romano, and in 2015, the duo hit

the road, traveling across the country

and filming for two months. The
footage of Romano using his low center
of gravity and immense hand strength
to grind, hop and stall with the best
of them began piling up. One can get
a taste of his skills on Hunsbergers
YouTube channel, but there are hours
more of astonishing action to be seen.
Hunsbergers current self-funded
passion project is editing the hours of
footage into a documentary style movie,
so the ingenuity of Romano can reach
the larger audience it deserves. In addition,
Romano does not speak English, so
Hunsberger is seeking translators to
decipher the skaters native Portuguese
for English-speaking audiences.
After his experiences with Romano,
Hunsberger is focused on finding other
individuals who have triumphed at
their respective sports despite physical

challenges, and getting their stories out

not that he will be giving up skating
anytime soon.
When asked how the scene has
changed in the almost 20 years he has
been part of it, Hunsberger observed
that the popularity of skateboarding
is at an all-time high.
A lot of new companies and
corporations have emerged and are
backing the sport more than ever,
he said.
While many would like the sport
to stay distant from the influence of
big money, the recent attention has
brought contest payouts to an alltime high. It has also generated tons
of enthusiasm among younger and
younger kids.
The kids skating are pushing
themselves to extremes every day, said
Hunsberger. And the tricks they are
radiusmag.com

pulling off are literally mind blowing.

The renewed popularity of
skateboarding has even resulted in its
first Olympic appearance in Tokyo in
2020. Unfortunately, it also means that
getting access to events as a freelancer
is harder than ever, especially when
sponsors are looking to control the
distribution of content. After hanging
out with Romano, Hunsberger finds the
challenge less intimidating.
Im just excited to be there filming
it all go down, and to ride my boards
whenever I can for life! he said. | r

Alan Fettermans
Art Shimmers in Golden Leaves
By JEAN N ET T E MOS E R- O R R

Painter, sculptor, poet and philosopher

Alan Fetterman has a symbiotic
relationship with his native Bucks County.
His studio is in an old grist mill by
a creek where the elements of earth,
air and water come together. There
is an enormous sycamore tree that
overhangs the studio. It is a bucolic
place for a studio, but one that also
carries a strong life force.
All of these elements can be seen
and felt in Fettermans paintings and
sculptures. Fetterman describes his
style as ferventism.
I fervently embrace my work with
zeal, explains Fetterman.
His connection to the area is powerful.
The paintings carry a brightness, and
have a shimmering energy to them.
The subject matter is largely landscapes
from the Bucks County area barns,
fields, and vistas.

But there is no passivity to the

paintings. There is a magnetism that
draws one in to look further. Fettermans
paintings make one want to know
the story of the subject, or to create
a story of ones own.
There are enough hardships in life,
said Fetterman. I dont concentrate on
that. I concentrate on what is bucolic
and sweet and energized.
Fetterman is a self-taught artist.
His early work was plein air, and he
founded the Bucks County Plein Air
Arts Festival. He mostly works in oils,
either on canvas or glass. He also works
in watercolor and photography. His
photographs evoke a strong positive/
negative space value.
When asked to describe what motivates
him in his art, Fetterman said, Passion is
perseverance; its part of who you are, why
youre here, and its what you have to do.

3 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / D E C E M B E R 2016 J A N U A R Y 2017

Fetterman will be creating a show

of his work in a pop-up gallery setting
entitled Golden Leaves. The work
references what Fetterman considers
to be his golden years, the autumnal
phase of his life.
Gold represents the wonderment,
greatness and shine of life, said
Fetterman.
All of the sculptures and paintings
contain gold or gold leaf, with gilded
frames. He will also be reciting his original
poetry with a golden hue value. | r

LAMBERTVILLES ROXEY BALLET

By ST EV E CH E R N OS K I

A CLOSER LOOK

THE LARGEST PROFESSIONAL BALLET COMPANY

IN THE SMALLEST CITY IN AMERICA

The Hardest Working Man in Show

Business and The Most Interesting
Man in the World have moved on,
but Lambertville-based Roxey Ballet
owner/founder Mark Roxey may well
be a present-day incarnation of both.
Roxey, who grew up in the BedfordStuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn,
N.Y., works a packed seven-day-aweek schedule as a dancer, instructor,
professional boxing trainer, martial
artist, and when he can fit it into his
schedule, equestrian.
Mark was given the opportunity
to first dance in kindergarten through
an American Ballet Theater outreach
program to New York Public Schools,
but ended up distancing himself from
the dance style after getting beaten
up, robbed, and thrown into a garbage
can by kids who targeted him for his
new hobby.
4 0 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / D E C E M B E R 2016 J A N U A R Y 2017

radiusmag.com

As he aged, Roxey started hanging

out with gangs in 1980s New York City
to toughen up, where breakdancing
began turning some youth away from
violence, and instead to the dance
phenomena that was born in the
Big Apple and captivated the world.

Ballet is the envy of

all sports. If you want
to be an ice skater,
guess what? Ballet.
A gymnast, a football
player? Ballet.
MA R K R OX EY

41

A CLOSER LOOK

He focused on practicing boxing in

Brownsville, and dancing at some of the
hottest city nightclubs and in various
music videos.
Around this time, he was discovered
at a fashion show by Edith dAddario,
director of the Joffrey Ballet School.
He brushed off the meeting, but soon
bumped into her again. She curtly told
him, I expect to see you on Monday.
Now, Roxey found himself back in
the same waters he tried to avoid in
his early childhood. Less than a year
later, he was dancing professionally,
which included touring, producing,
directing, guesting (or freelancing),
and teaching at colleges all over
North America.
In 1995, Roxey came to Hunterdon
County, where his wife Melissa grew
up. Together, they started the the
Hunterdon County Youth Ballet
at Prallsville Mills in Stockton, N.J.
A handful of years later, the school
evolved into a nonprofit, changing
its name to Roxey Ballet and moving
to its current location in northern
Lambertville.

If you are a dancer,

you are the envy of
every sport, because
it teaches you to know,
love, fine tune and
respect your body.
MAR K R OX EY

With generous support from

people like Mary Elizabeth Benjamin
of Flemington Furs, and the late
Rabbi Evan Jaffe of the Flemington
Jewish Community Center, the Ballet
evolved from producing shows like
the Nutcracker on a budget of
$500 to its current undertaking at
roughly a quarter of a million dollars.
Its the largest professional ballet
company in the smallest city in
the United States of America, said
Roxey. People dont typically build
ballet companies in small towns like
Lambertville, New Jersey. But Im the
city mouse, and my wife is the country
mouse, and we sort of found both
worlds here.
The ballet company has performed
in numerous cities throughout the
Northeast Corridor, and even at Barack
Obamas first presidential inauguration.
They call Lambertville home for most
of the fall through spring seasons, and
in addition to the Nutcracker, the
company has a lineup of shows, including
Frankenstein, Carmina Burana,
Cinderella, and a closing performance
featuring breast cancer survivors.
Its almost like watching a silent
movie its such a different experience
being so close and personal with the
live performances, Roxey said.
Theres a huge difference between
knowing about Roxey Ballet and
participating and coming out and being
part of our family and whats going on
here, he added. Theres an ongoing
gift being given to this community
every single day.
That community outreach includes
series like Tutus and Tiaras, where
young children can interact with
dancers, Beer and Ballet, where

A CLOSER LOOK

adults can sip suds and gaze at stage

performance art, and Brown Bag and
Ballet, where local employees breaking
for lunch can watch dancers rehearse.
Roxey harkened to George
Balanchines philosophy that a good
ballet company has to also have a
school. That school is the Mill Ballet
School, which is headed by his wife,
Melissa Roxey, and trains multiple
classes a year. Very young students are
introduced to dance through creative
movements, then later can choose a
technical style of dance like ballet, jazz,
hip hop, or tap. Each class has about
815 students, and offers instruction
in various styles, but ballet is always
the foundation.
The company also has Wheels and
Bodies in Motion, which combines
Mill Ballet School students with sit-down
dancers. They also hold curriculumintegrated dance sessions at places
like West Amwell Elementary School
and Parkway School of Ewing, both
in New Jersey.
radiusmag.com

Roxey believes that young people who

explore a show produced by the Roxey
Ballet or attend the companys Mill Ballet
School often find that the experience
far exceeds their expectations.
Ballet is the envy of all sports,
he observed. If you want to be an ice
skater, guess what? Ballet. A gymnast,
a football player? Ballet. Soccer,
swimming, equestrian sports? Ballet.
If you are a dancer, you are the envy
of every sport, because it teaches you
to know, love, fine tune and respect
your body.
The arts are the window to the
world, and dance teaches you to see
your reflection in others, Roxey said. | r

COVER ARTIST

EMILY
THOMPSON
By KRISY BOLTON- PAR E D ES

Queens native and Bucks County artist

Emily Thompson has found her groove.
Its reflected in her current work,
where beauty is rustic, thought
provoking and, in some cases, iconic:
ice cream parlors and old bowling alley
signs, signs from an arcades from down
the shore, and other rustic pieces of our
past, which seem to be diminishing as
quickly as she paints them.
As a fine artist, Thompson has
been recognized both regionally and
nationally for her paintings. Her current
work and distinct style has taken about
30 years to develop, and has a deep
meaning to her personally.

Thompson always loved vintage

signage, fonts, Chinese take-out food
containers, roadside architecture,
industrial structures, rust, texture,
and finding beauty in unconventional
scenes and objects.
This stems from my background
as an abstract painter and as a graphic
designer, she explained. I love
lettering, and can appreciate a block
of auto body garages with their colorful
signs, scrap metal, and junk laying
around, which became the subject for
a series of recent paintings.
That sensibility has always been
at play, as she traveled every day on
the subway to high school and college
in Manhattan.
Id overlook the area in Queens
called the Iron Triangle at Willets
Point, right outside of Flushing, and
knew at some point that this would

COVER ARTIST

become a subject for my paintings,

Thompson explained.
By painting these vintage subjects,
she is cataloging them for us, so they
may never be lost something out
of the norm for Bucks County, an area
that has so much traditional art.
Thompson likes doing something
different, and she likes that its
very personal. Among the many
artists from whom she draws
inspiration are Richard Diebenkorn,
Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler,
and Robert Motherwell.
Thompson was accepted into the
prestigious High School of Art and
Design in New York, and then went
on to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts
Degree at the School of Visual Arts.
After graduation, she became an art
director for the advertising department
of Bloomingdales. From there, she
went on to be a graphic designer at
Disney Magazine Publishing, and then
Playboy Enterprises. At the same time,
Thompson also enjoyed a successful
career as an editorial illustrator.
She remains focused on both graphic
design and fine art.
Presently, Thompson is continuing
with her signage series and, Really
anything cool that I come across! Im
constantly looking for my kind of stuff
like old bowling alleys, cool motel signs,
diners, auto body shops, etc.
Since this work is more representational
than some in the past, I didnt want to
get caught up in trying to make things
super rendered and too realistic, she
continued. Its okay if the drawing
isnt totally accurate, and I want the
work to show texture and look sort of
distressed. I want to drag lines through
the paint, and scribble into the wet
radiusmag.com

paint with a pencil, and even will

leave a smudge if I think it looks cool
and works.
Right now, she works only in a square
format oil on panel, often 12" 12".
My work is a layering process, and
these paintings are usually done in one
shot, said Thompson. I have to work
wet on wet to achieve the look I want.
I actually pencil in my sketch onto the
panel, and then kind of treat the block
as I did in illustration. Once I have
everything down, I go back with palette
knives and thicker paint to get the
texture. All my paintings are finished
with a wax coating and then buffed to
a satin finish.
Thompson says Facebook has been
a great way to connect and network
with other artists that paint in an urban
style and share the appreciation for the
same subject matter. Shes made great
connections, and the social media platform
allows more people to see her work.
I love getting feedback from other
artists that I greatly admire, said
Thompson. That really means a lot.
I want to be part of that group of urban
painters the ones that do what I do.
Whats next for Thompson? Shes
working on paintings for an upcoming
two-person show in 2017 with her husband
George Thompson at the Gallery at
Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y.
The show will feature a series of paintings
from Coney Island, signage, auto body
shops and, of course, Chinese take-out
food containers. | r

Hamiltons Grill Room:

Rediscovering a Lambertville
Culinary Mainstay
By ST EV E CH E R N OS K I

The Garden Room, with decorative branches adorning its ceiling, welcomes guests into the restaurant.

Hamiltons Grill Room, a Lambertville

dining destination since 1988, is easy
to locate in the busy downtown with
a strong sense of smell alone. Nestled
along the Delaware and Raritan Canal
path, the scent of succulent meats
cooking over an open grill sends savory
smoke signals to nearby walkers,
runners, cyclists and tourists.
The incredible aroma leads to a small
alley off Coryell Street, where a semihidden area is demarcated on signage
as the The Porkyard because of the
sites history as a slaughterhouse in the
early 20th Century, along with housing
an icehouse, flour mill and bakery.
Owner Jim Hamilton is an awardwinning Broadway set designer, but
always kept his Lambertville-New Hope
area roots, where his father was one of
the towns doctors. Due to his talent and
artistic background, Hamiltons Grill

Room is not just a place for epicurean

adventure, nourishment, but also a small
escape from the everyday world.
The Garden Room, with decorative
branches adorning its ceiling, welcomes
guests into the restaurant. Combined
with scene lighting, it gives the
entrance space a magical feeling
when walking in, as General Manager
J.D. Stinson described.
The other rooms were each carefully
designed by Hamilton with alternating
themes. The Delaware Room is an
homage to folk art painter Edward
Hicks, the Bishops Room features
artwork in a cozy setting, while the
Gallery Room boasts quiet views of
the canal. Hamiltons outdoor patio,
manicured with red barn pebbled
stones under large trees, is used
for outdoor dining in three seasons,
and is a special experience particularly

at lunch, which is a weekend-only

affair. The courtyard is shared with
a nautical-themed Victorian bar,
The Boat House, and this larger
area acts as a harbor of sorts youre
still in Lambertville, but after sipping
a glass of wine, you might think youre
temporarily in Marthas Vineyard
or a Mediterranean hideaway.
The two establishments have
a symbiotic relationship Hamiltons
Grill Room encourages diners to have
a cocktail beforehand at the Boat House,
and potentially return for a nightcap,
or guests can purchase and carry over
their own bottle.
The fresh American grill cuisine here
has always boasted numerous seafood
and meat dishes, and while Hamiltons
might be more Mediterranean-inspired
in their take on seafood, its truly
eclectic, traditional, American hearty

fare, said Marketing Director Kevin

Gaertner. Its elegant home cooking
with flavors composed and mixed from
all regions.
The menus are created and detailed
by Hamilton himself, and ingredients
are sourced at nearby markets and
orchards, like the Roots to River Farm
in New Hope. Even the fish is preferred
wild and sustainable; some from the
Jersey Shores Barnegat Bay.

The foundation of Hamiltons Grill

Room is not only the open kitchen
Royal Oak charcoal grill in the center
of the restaurant, with six tall dining
chairs surrounding the top perimeter,
but also Executive Chef Mark Miller,
who has been there for 20 years.
An open kitchen layout visible
to diners calls for a chef with strong

interpersonal skills, and Miller relishes

those interactions.
Its a great spot, Miller said. I get
to see the customers reactions to the
food, and Ive developed a relationship
with a lot of the people who come here.
A majority of the entrees are prepared
in the open kitchen fish, meat, ribs,
and all that famous grilling. There is
also a wood oven, where pizzas are
often prepared.
Guests can actually experience
that culinary process, then it goes to
our back kitchen, where the sous-chef
plates them, Stinson pointed out.
The amount of food that goes back
and forth is truly amazing.
Hamiltons Grill Room has been
successfully experimenting with prix
fixe menus and catering more to locals
on weekdays. Gaertner explained that
the Grill Room initially introduced

a well-received Tastes of Spring

menu, and wanted to continue the
momentum into the fall and beyond.
The weekly Tuesday through
Thursday offering is a supplement
to the flagship menu.
Its moderately priced, but also allows
Mark Miller to create on a weekly basis
a three- or even four-course dinner,
while giving our local clientele a prime,
moderately-priced meal, said Stinson.
The Grill Room is also a natural
locale for special events.
We host every type of function,
reception, fundraising dinner, private
party this place is a very special
dining location for groups of up to
80100 guests, Gaertner observed.
The menu is custom-crafted for each
event by Hamilton, who then works
with the chef, staff and client to fine
tune the selection.

Personalizing the setting is given

as much attention as is perfecting
the menu, with flowers, decorations,
carefully-chosen seating arrangements,
and a wide variety of service stations
making each event truly memorable.
Both Gaertner and Stinson
emphasized that the ambiance, food,
along with the care and creativity
of the owner and staff, makes this
a special place.
Youre simply not going to find
a dining experience as unique as
that offered at Hamiltons Grill Room,
said Stinson. | r
