SOL- WHI. 9a a) sequencing events related to the spread and influence of Christianity and the
Catholic Church throughout Europe.
Lesson Aim for Today (teacher): still introducing the unit and get started teaching about the
impact of the Catholic Church on the Middle Ages.
Student Learning Objective: To learn about the impact of Christianity on the beginning of the
Middle Ages in Europe.
The students will discuss what their homework in anticipation of the unit forthcoming. They
will also take some notes about how Christianity and the Catholic Church influenced the Middle
Ages.
A) Introduction: Morning Eye Opener and run down
B) Review: to understand where we are we need to take some time and review the fall of the
Roman Empire.
C) Lesson Content: Impact of Christianity on the Middle Ages of Europe
D) Question(s): How and why did the Church grow in importance during the Middle Ages?
Teach the Lesson:
E) Activities:
1. Morning Eye Opener
2. Do the webquest to build some intrigue about the next unit up, Middle Ages. As they go
through most of the questions are surface level questions but have them focus on
number 12. What would they want to do and why? Is there something different that they
would want to do back then that maybe we dont have today or different. With this
question they are having to think about what they like to do and search through the
different jobs that were available back then and see what would most likely match up.
3. Intro to the middle ages video. At the end talk about that for a couple of minutes. What
were some things that they recognized from the video and talk about some of the things
we have to cover as we go throughout the unit.
4. PPT on the medieval stopping to explain the structure of the church drawing a pyramid
starting at the local level and moving up to the role of the pope and starting with the
Rome reminders to connect this together.
5. If we have time we will do the coat of arms activity that pertains to their lives and how
they do things in relation to the groups of people we are learning about during the Middle
Ages.
F) Materials needed: internet, computer and projector, homework from the night before so we
can look at number 12 together, intro to middle ages video, handout for those that want paper
with the questions about Rome
G) Check of Understanding: talk our way through the parts about Rome, look at the homework
from last night and talk look at the timelines if there is time.
Lesson Closure:
H) Conclusion of Lesson: review about the church with the last few minutes highlighting on the
foundation in Rome the emergence of Christianity and connecting it all to what we just learned
about Clovis and Charlemagne being appointed power by the Pope
I) Reinforcement: We will do this more in the coming days as we build on the knowledge we
are gaining.
Self Eval: We did not have time for the coat of arms today we will pick up with that tomorrow.
