Asa Special Education Teacher, I have had the privilege working with Jessica at Queen Kaahumanu Elementary School during the 2015-2016 school year. Asa paraprofessional tutor, Jessica has fostered a safe and positive learning environment for all her students and it allowed them to find success in their daily work. Jessica focused on her students’ needs and implemented effective strategies to address problem behaviors while maintaining an open dialogue with her colleagues. In addition, as a student teacher, she constantly put tremendous effort into her lessons, actively sought out feedback and reflected on her strengths and areas of improvement. In both roles, Jessica has supported her students in a way where they felt cared for and respected. Throughout the day, she communicated and engaged with various students to ensure that they understood the lessons and provided guidance when necessary. She always projected an encouraging and positive attitude, which helped her build a positive rapport with the students she worked with. Ms, Pagtulingan has consistently shown a high level of professionalism and willingness to collaborate with her professional peers. She also displayed strong communication and organizational skills with her debriefings and scheduling of students’ days and events. Another aspect that impressed me about Jessica was her diligence with data collection. She was self-directed and tried to problem-solve before coming for advice or feedback. Working with Jessica has been a delightful experience not only for myself, but also for the students that we worked with. She is a hard worker and committed to being an effective teacher in Hawaii.
