N479 Professional Activity Evaluation

Name: Douglas Turner Date of Activity: 09/24 & 10/01 Faculty name: Mary OConnor
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with:
09/24- St. Johns IPEP Community Hearing Screening from 7am to 12. I was able to observe and
participate in a hearing screening for community elders at St. Lukes Home. I collaborated with
other students to physically assess and interview residents at St. Lukes to evaluate and discuss
their hearing loss. I was able to physically assess the residents inner ears and observe the
hearing test being performed. Working with other students as a team we interviewed the
residents to gain insight to their particular hearing loss issues. Interviews were conducted to learn
about when the residents first noted hearing loss, how personal hearing loss affects the residents
personal lives, and how this clinical helped them to learn treatments and how to help cope with
any adversities related to their hearing loss. This information is also used by the clinic to help
make changes necessary for future clinics.
10/01- Emergency Civilian Casualty Care training was an educational power point presentation.
This experience was more educational. Although the presentation was interactional in a Q&A
format, my role was more to listen, learn, and participate in the educational dialogue.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The IPEP Community Hearing Screening was held at St. Lukes Home from 7am to 12 on
Saturday 09/24. The Emergency Civilian Casualty Care (ECCC) training was held at the Tucson
Fire Department headquarters Downtown Tucson. The training was on Saturday 10/01 from 8am

Discuss the value of this experience to you.

St. Lukes IPEP- I feel this experience was valuable. This experience allowed me to work interprofessionally with other students as a team. It also was a great opportunity for me to participate
in a hearing screening with an older population. I enjoyed the experience and think it helped me
to develop inter-professional, nurse/client, and clinical skills all in one environment. It also
allowed me to learn more about hearing loss.
ECCC- I enjoyed this training and feel I gained valuable information on community based
emergency information. It was engaging, provided important emergency information on being
prepared for unforeseen events or disasters, and possible future job or volunteer opportunities.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why
or why not?
St. Lukes IPEP- Yes I would recommend this experience to others in the future. Aside from
truly enjoying the experience, I feel it was a great opportunity to give back to the community,

delivered important material on community emergency situations, and possible future job or
