Biological Sciences
Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine
(DVM) Degree Typically to be
completed in 4 years of Veterinary

Average U.S. Salary:
$50,000-$60,000
* Salary right out of veterinary school
is lower, and those with good
clientele have the potential to have
higher annual salaries. This is also
dependent on the area one works in.

A Day in the Life:

I usually start between 9:30 and
10:00AM. If I have quick calls I can fit
between 7 and 8 per day, but I usually
fit in about 4-5 a day so that I can fit in
an emergency if needed. On the drives I
make phone calls and occasionally stop
to check emails or labs on my phone
and I eat on the road too. I am usually
done around 4 or 5 each day.
Every day is different except for in
February, which is my dental month! A
little surgery here and there, a little
repro, preventative medicine, its a
good mix.

Piece of Mind.
Large animal veterinarians have a goal of maintaining both animal happiness and human
happiness. For this reason, veterinarians must have a good bedside manner as well as be good
with animals. The career is only right for a very few individuals those who love both animals and
their human companions.

Different Areas of the Field

Often, it is unknown that there are so many
niche areas of the veterinary medical field.
Similar to human medicine, there are areas one
may specialize in. After veterinary school, a
veterinarian may choose to apply to a residency
to continue their education. This way, they are
able to further their knowledge in a specific
area of the field. For example, an individual
interested in large animal surgery may
complete a residency at a large animal medical
center with a well-known large animal surgeon.
Such positions are usually quite competitive,
and pay is very low in residency positions right
out of veterinary school.
