STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

A quote by Hippocrates “The natural healing force in each one of us is the greatest
force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our
food”, has really inspired me and has added fuel in choosing Master in Food Science
and Technology as my subject for further studies.

I am Runjhun, (Passport No: V5951764), daughter of Mr. Rajpal and Mrs. Rekha. My
father passed away on 22nd of August, 2010. After my father’s death, my uncle, Mr.
Tejpal, took on all the responsibilities of my father and supported the whole family
independently. I am currently a permanent resident of House No. 183/1, Ward No. 3,
near H.D.F.C. Bank Ladwa, where I live with my mother and stepfather.

My name is Runjhun, my Date of Birth is 31/01/2002 and I am citizen of India and

here I am applying for the degree of Master of Food Science and Technology in RMIT
University, Melbourne, Australia. My father, Mr. Rajpal passed away, when I was 8
years old. After his death, my uncle, Mr. Tejpal, took on all the responsibilities of my
father and supported the whole family independently. Currently, I am living with my
mother and stepfather. They are self-employed. I have a well settled and established
family to take care of my education and living expenses. I am single. I completed my
10th with 8.8 CGPA in 2017 from CBSE and 12th in Art stream with 65.6%. Since
PTE was the requirement for studying overseas I gave the exam and got 7 bands
overall and according to each module I got 8 in listening, 8 in reading, 6 inspeaking
and 6 in writing . We have access to sufficient finances to cover the cost of tuition and
living expenses for the duration of my program

As I grew, I realized healthcare facilities were not just an issue, lack of knowledge over
nutrition was also a major issue for people not being healthy in my country. This is
also a reason I wish to undergo the subject of my choice for my further studies. The
aim I carried since my early childhood helped me concentrate on my studies and my
experience during my dentistry practice fuelled up my commitment towards achieving
my aim. The sense of responsibility towards mankind and my aim made me a
hardworking student since my school days and also generated a love for science.

I completed my matriculation in 2017 with 8.8 CGPA from the Central Board of
Secondary Education. Then I passed grade-12 (Arts) in 2019 with 65.6% from the
same board. I joined for BSC (Home Science) and successfully completed it in 2022
with 71.37% from Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra.

Competing amongst hundreds and thousands of students applying to get a seat in one
of the finest universities in Australia, RMIT, securing a seat for myself proved to be
another landmark. The happiness and belief in me could be easily seen in my parents’
eyes, which has been a source of inspiration for me to perform better at each level of
my life. Joining the university was a great opportunity to help people lead a healthy
life, which was my childhood aspiration. It was like diving into an ocean full of
resources that had no limits to gain knowledge. During my graduation, I got many
chances to participate in different workshops that helped me gain practical knowledge
and understand my academics even better. It would not be unfair calling me a
hardworking and career-focused person.
After trying to research for the best courses offered in the related subject of my
interest, it was heart-breaking to find out that there are less than a handful of courses
in my country that were related to the subject I aimed to pursue, Master of Food
Science and Technology. It was so pitiful to know that my country still lags in
providing quality education of such subjects with proper practicals involved and few
colleges that have adapted to the international level education system have limited
seats available. Hence, after several references and referrals, it came to my knowledge
that Australian universities have become an ideal place for higher education studies,
sought by many prospective international students. The universities in Australia apart
from offering the best quality education have heartily accepted international students
and have always made sure that they pursue their education in a peaceful and
multicultural environment. Keeping all these circumstances in mind, I started
researching for destinations that would best suit me to pursue my further studies. I
researched various developed countries like; the USA, Canada, Australia, and the UK.
I found vast differences in all the provisions for international students in each
country. I found the USA to be a little unsafe in recent days due to issues of racism
which were very heart-breaking. The UK, however, was very expensive in terms of the
living and fee structure. Canada was unsuitable for me due to its climatic conditions. I
found Australia to fit me in every aspect. First, the climate here was almost the same
as in India. Second, the fee structure of the universities in Australia is reasonable. The
living expenses for an international student are affordable too.

As I gained knowledge about the different scopes of food science, Food and Nutrition
attracted me very much. Also, during my internship, my interest in the subject had
already started to grow even deeper as I realized the first and foremost major factor for
a person to be healthy totally depended upon what he or she eats. During my
graduation, I got an opportunity to grab some valuable knowledge. I earned an
internship of one month in the dietetics department of Cygnus Super Specialty
Hospital. During my association with the dietetics department, I have come across
many patients who are unhealthy because of their eating habits which was also a
major reason for their unhealthy oral hygiene. Coming across many situations and
patients, my slowly growing interest in Food and Nutrition urged me to apply for the
same for my further studies. Hence, I now have decided to broaden my knowledge over
the subject of Food Science and Technology for my further studies. While researching
over the subject, the course is rated 5 stars for skills development in Health Services &
Support in Study in Australia-Study Info Centre Guide. I believe after the completion
of the course, I will be able to build essential skills and knowledge over the role of food
and nutrition in human health and illness prevention, food composition knowledge
and culinary skills, novel food product design, the role of food and nutrition in
performance of body during various activities, and an understanding of food and its
impacts on the human micro biome, which will surely help in my aim of becoming a
nutritionist. Also, the pandemic has made me realize how people in the field of science
are valued. From doctors and nurses who have been the fighters at the frontline to the
scientists who have been continuously working to produce vaccines to cure this deadly
disease. This has also added fuel to my interest in the field of science and has made
firmer points in my mind as to how I have to make a change in the world and in my
country serving for the field. To achieve my aim with a better education, my parents
fully support my decision to apply to Australia for my further studies, since my
country lacks offering education for subjects as such. Not to forget their endless efforts
to support me in every little thing I ask for. They have heartily accepted my decision of
going abroad for further studies and will be sponsoring me throughout my course
duration.

Why Melbourne and RMIT?

While researching universities and cities in the country, Melbourne has attracted me
very much. Also, Melbourne offers one of the highest standards of living in the world,
and yet is more affordable than many other study destinations. Also, reading that
Melbourne is famous for its cultural diversity and that people of more than 200
different nationalities live, work and study in Melbourne, speak over 170 languages
and practice over 100 religions generated a sense of safety for an international student
like me who is travelling abroad for the first time and also my parents. My friend’s
cousin who is currently residing in Sydney suggested that I apply to universities in
Melbourne. It sounded very reasonable for international students and while
researching universities in the area the RMIT University best fitted me. It has more
than 97 thousand students from different countries. The teaching techniques the
university offers was another factor that made me choose it for my future endeavours.
The cost for the program is AUD 38,400 per annum. Also, the university is ranked as
the best university in the country.

To achieve my aim with better education, my family fully support my decision to apply
to Australia for my further studies. We have almost Rs. 31 in lack of funds. Details of
financial assets are mentioned below: :( Conversion rate as 1 AUD = 55 INR)

So, my family will be taking care of all expenses during my education in Australia.

Future plan and purpose to return home:

I feel people who head to developed countries for higher education must realize that it
is high time for them to come back and utilize their knowledge on factors that would
help our country develop. Hence, choosing to gain a higher degree from a different
land would add value to meet my aim to see my country as a developed healthy nation
as there are few educational resources to complete the subject of interest in my
homeland.

After completing my course in the stipulated time, I would come back to my country
and first be associated with an NGO as a nutritionist as there are many organizations
working for nutrition programs in the rural areas. Many nutrition-based programs
would be my major priority. Being associated with such programs would help me
understand the situation of the rural population for lacking nutritional habits.
Earning a degree in such a program will surely add value to my resume to get through
in such reputed organizations where I can bag prominent positions such as Program
Manager, Country Director, or even a Project Head. These positions are prestigious
offering attractive salary packages with additional facilities not only to the staff but
also their nearest family members. A Project Manager earns a starting pay cheque of
INR 60,000. The degree I earn from Australia would help me gain ample knowledge
and experience to pave my path towards my long term goal of establishing an
organization of my own in 5 years from now which would help the rural population to
gain knowledge over the miracle of nutritional food for their healthy living.

Apart from mastering my aim I also would want to head back to my country for my
family who have never thought twice before shedding a single drop of sweat in
investing in me and what I have achieved so far. After achieving my degree I would
come back to help my parents to raise my siblings. Not to forget I also want to be an
example for my siblings to work hard and achieve their dreams like her older sister.

Declaration:

It would not be unfair to address myself as a deserving candidate to get a chance to

enrol myself in this reputed institution as I come from a family of strong ethics of hard
work which is also shown by my academic results and my PTE result overall 59
scorings. I am well aware of the student visa conditions Sub-Class 500 in Australia
which are:

 I need to maintain a minimum of 80% attendance in the class as I am being

sponsored by my family.
 I am allowed to work not more than 40 hours per fortnight except for vacation
periods.
 In order to pass, I should get 50% marks in each subject.
 Until 6 Months of enrollment, I cannot transfer or change to other universities
or colleges.
 I need to have health insurance according to Overseas Student Health Cover
(OSHC) till I stay in Australia.
 Involvement in any type of criminal activity is strictly not permitted.
 I need to inform the University/Department of Home Affairs (DHA) within 7
days in case I change the address or contact details.

Further, if given a chance to enrol in the reputed institution, I would leave no stones
unturned to prove myself worthy for the opportunity given and would also make sure
to complete my studies in the allocated time and return to my country to achieve my
dream.

Yours Sincerely,

Runjhun
