I sat with Jessica Hallin (summer school coordinator) and talked about
the frustration of how many students could not attend summer school
due to the lack of bussing. On the beginning days of school, our job is
to call home to families that enrolled their child in summer school or
families that would benefit from summer school. Out of the 60
students that we called about 40 of them could not attend due to lack
of transportation. Most of these students were students of color with
the greatest population being Hispanic, which our school has been
targeting academic improvement.
We went through the financial budget of summer school and tried to
think of ways to creatively fund this. We felt passionately that this was
a disservice for students that really need the practice. As a
partnership, we plan to talk with the Superintendent with the planning
of next school year and summer school.
