K-12 Mathematics with Mindy Tavernier (Math Coach K-8) and

Mike Gingerich (HS Math Dept. Head)

Alignment:
What do benchmarks actually mean?
Are we actually aligned?
Communication up and down grade level
K-2 Math Expressions
Project based
Manipulatives and games
CMP- Connected mathematics Project
*When there isnt enough information, the teachers pull supplemental
information.
3-5 Houghton Mifflin Math
Traditional math- like Prentice Hall
Primary learning priority is number and operations. However, the
biggest problem is that elementary teachers are not well trained.
There has been no formal group mathematics training in IGH.
Challenges come with time devotion to the trainings.
Test score low rationale:
Teachers dont understand the benchmarks, but dont actually
understand.
Work with math coach more oftenBig push is to find power/ essential standards and choose 10 and done
by building. Then bring it together by leaders from building to make
committee. Of the three buildings Hilltop doesnt even get to have PLC
conversations on mathematics.
K-5 level good things:
Finally having conversations about benchmarks
Daily 3 training all staff at Salem Hills went.
Talking vertically and talking challenging
Creating a good math program:
Good PD to motivate people- smaller setting
Utilizing a vertical team to create need in areas that help
(multiplication)
Put a math coach in all buildings (and reading)
Teaching practice
At HS level- instructional coaching

6-8
Prentice Hall with supplemental
Strong: Grade level 7/8 aligned strong
Strong: Big AVID push
Weakness: Optional vertical and department
No math coach
HS
Algebra and Geometry Pearson Prentice Hall- traditional
Essential Algebra no book (Navigator and supplement)
Pre-calc/ trig- Pearson
Statistics
Calculus AB/ BC (Stuart)
Strong: Algebra and geometry same publisher- aligned/
continuity
Given PLC time to address one of the preps that a teacher
instructs
Time to look at results and teaching. All meetings
happening at the
same time.
Weakness: Cannot choose who they PLC with no monitoring. Not
all classes
addressed. PLCs that are not functioning well should
be sat in by
an administrator. Attitude and leadership views are all
over the
place in IGH schools thus funneling.
