Our math coach, Karin Vogt, gave the scope and sequence of the Level C textbook to me. It lists
the standards based on Common Core Standards. I was not able to find anything that related this to our
Nebraska State Standards.

Teaching Strategies:

CMC Math is taught using Direct Instruction. McGraw Hill uses a unique presentation of the
skills. The skills are introduced, developed and reviewed continually. The skills are organized in tracks.
The lessons are designed to be presented in 30 minutes with 3-5 tracks being represented daily. All
skills may be revisited throughout each level. Student goals for lessons are generally 90% before moving
on to the next lessons. Daily remedies are given to students are struggle meeting the goal. Many of the
techniques are unique to this program, but proving successful with our students. Math in the
elementary has been weak in the past years. This program was the first step to boost our math
proficiencies.

Each lesson in the lower levels is accompanied with interactive board presentations. Placement
tests are given to each student and placed in small math groups of 5-10 students. Our math coach
monitors student growth weekly. Cumulative tests are given every 30 lessons. Based on the data from
the daily, weekly, and cumulative assessments students are occasionally regrouped.

Special Needs Considerations:
I spent time this week with Karin Vogt, our elementary math coach. She believes the small math
groups benefit special need students. We are able to minimize distractions in smaller groups, provide
more guidance with learning skills, and develop closer relationships with students. Mrs. Vogt also
commented that the teachers have a much better understanding of learning abilities. Struggling
students take a few additional minutes between class changes to run through remediation one-on-one
with the teacher. This gives students the extra practice and confidence to be successful. The math
coach helps make informed decisions about the needs and assistance required for student with IEPs
based on data gathered daily by teachers. High ability students are placed at levels more challenging to
encourage growth. Currently we do not have any ELL students in our school system. However, I looked
through the teacher manual and found supplements and resources designed specifically for ELL
students.

Current Materials Evaluation:
The direct instruction text is very easy to follow as a teacher. However the techniques used to
teach many of the skills are not traditional. This makes many of the on-line math resources difficult to
use as supplemental materials. The student materials and the teacher remedies have a seemingly
endless list of practice for struggling students.

The major weakness of this program is the inability for parents to understand the strategies
used to teach some of the skills. Because of this, students generally do not have homework to complete
with parents. As a result, students need additional repetitions whenever possible.

Technology resources available:

The elementary classrooms each have 10 iPads for student use. The grades share a computer lab
of 30 laptops. Currently students have access to XtraMath.com on iPads in the classroom. Students take
turns practicing the basic math facts daily for a quick 10 minutes. The program remembers the facts
students struggled with previously and repeats them until mastery. We also purchase iXL.com for all
students K-6. We encourage parents to help students practice skills using this resource. It has a reward
system with the program for student to show mastery of skills. Teachers receive weekly email reports
about the student activity of the site.

Library resources available:

Our library serves all PK-12 students. While talking with the librarian, she commented that
many of the resources that I will find are in the classroom libraries. With this is mind, when I was
searching for resources; I found twenty-one math related books. However fifteen were located in the
preschool classroom library. The remaining 6 books dealt with shapes and counting a bit young for 2nd
grade students. It is clear that our library is lacking in this area. I was reminded by the math coach to
check for audio/visual resources in Discover education online. There were over 1000 resources for
general k-2 math. The resources range from short videos about place value to songs about fact families.
I also searched our Axis360 wall of eBooks. The searching was difficult, but I was able to find a few
books available. I believe most of the math related books we a bit young for 2nd grade math students.
