To the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Community:

Im writing to share the news that Dr. Jim Weinstein has advised the Boards of Trustees that he
will be retiring from the position of CEO and President of Dartmouth-Hitchcock and DartmouthHitchcock Health at the completion of his current term, June 30, 2017. Jim informed Board
leadership of his decision more than a year ago. Now that the time has come to begin a
national search for his replacement, it is appropriate to make a public announcement.
The Boards of Trustees accepts Jims decision with great admiration and appreciation for all he
has done during his many years of service at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, not only in his current role,
but in past leadership roles, including President of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, Director of
The Dartmouth Institute, and the inaugural Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics.
Jim has led the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system since 2011, during a period of enormous
change in health care nationally and across the D-H system. He has developed and driven a
strategy for creating a sustainable health system and has formed a number of important
alliances, both inside and outside of health care. Jim has led us in our many affiliations across
the states to create a truly integrated delivery system. This includes our health plan partnership
with Harvard Pilgrim, and more recently our re-organization of the academic health center with
our partners at Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine. His dedication to quality
and safety for patients has made D-H one of the most highly ranked health care organizations in
the country.
Most recently, Jim and the management team have worked swiftly to address a difficult
financial situation, putting a performance improvement plan in place and stabilizing the
institution in the face of an unexpected deficit for FY16. The Trustees have been encouraged by
first quarter financial results for FY17 and by the recent reviews by the Fitch and Standard &
Poors ratings groups, which resulted in their reaffirmations of an A bond rating for D-H.
Jim has created a strong foundation for a new leader to build on the accomplishments of the
past five years, and to solidify Dartmouth-Hitchcocks future as a sustainable health system.
Witt/Kieffer, a leading executive search firm, has been retained to assist with the process of a
national search to identify and evaluate both internal and external candidates for the position
of CEO & President of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system.
In coming days, the Search Committee, co-chaired by my fellow Trustee, Bill Conaty, and
myself, will share details about the search process, including names of the committee members
and the steps we will be taking over the coming weeks.
Im pleased to say that Jim will continue to be active in health care, carrying on his work on the
High Value Healthcare Collaborative, which he co-founded, the National Academy of Medicine
Board for Population Health, the national VA Special Medical Advisory Group, and other bodies
on which he serves. Additionally, he will retain his Geisel affiliations, including the Peggy Y.

Thomson Chair in the Evaluative Clinical Sciences, and his clinical role within the Department of
Orthopaedics.
Dr. Weinstein will remain as CEO and President until June 30, 2017 and will provide valuable
support throughout the leadership transition. We look forward to continuing to partner with
Jim while we work to identify his successor. There is no responsibility more important for the
Board of Trustees than the selection of the organizations leader. We are committed to a
rigorous search process, and to identifying and engaging an exceptional individual to lead
Dartmouth-Hitchcock in the years ahead.
Thank you all for your dedication to Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
Sincerely,
Anne-Lee Verville
Chair, Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health Boards of Trustees
