Stats Activity 4
Paper Towel Comparisons

A)Null hypothesis: h mu (box) = mu (roll)

Alternative hypothesis: h mu (box) < (roll)
B) It is reasonable to conduct a 2-sample hypothesis test because there are comparable values.
This way we can measure the different levels of absorption.
C) Yes, there are outliers in both plots. The Box has an outlier of 2.1 on the high end and 1.8 as
the lower outlier. The Roll has an outlier of 2.4 on the high side and 1.85 as the lower outlier of
that plot. It is reasonable to assume that the absorption rate of the boxed version is lower than
the rolled version of paper towel. The scale indicates that they are both comparable and judging
by their means we can determine that the boxed version has a better absorption rate. The mean
time of the boxed version is lower than the rolled versions mean.
D) The p-value of the test is .150. Based on the results of the p-value, the boxplot measurements
and the normal probability plots the information points to the best paper towel to purchase is
the boxed version. This paper towel is consistently a front runner. A consumer who is interested
in getting the most absorption value for their dollar is certain to appreciate the boxed version.
Absorption is just one aspect of purchasing paper towels. Other considerations to consider are
price, quantity and brand recognition. In promoting this product, the marketers could certainly

refer to the data analysis of absorbency in boosting their product above others. Having their
product backed by a Consumer Reports study would certainly influence customers in their favor.
