Good afternoon team,

We will be sending astronauts to Mars in or about the year 2030. One of the
problems that we will need to solve is how to keep our team of explorers fed and
supplied with oxygen while on this mission. The trip to Mars will take 6 months.
The astronauts will have to live on Mars for 18 to 20 months waiting for Earth and
Mars to align again before they can begin the trip back home. Again the trip from
Mars to Earth will take 6 months for a total mission time of approximately 32
months.
Supplying the mission with enough packaged food and Oxygen will be too heavy for
our rocket to lift. We need to find a lighter way to keep the team sustained for the
duration of their trip.
The Martian atmosphere consists of 96% carbon dioxide, 1.9% argon, 1.9%
nitrogen, and traces of other elements including small amounts of oxygen. The
Martian soil has no microorganisms, or organic matter needed for plant life to be
successful. Curiosity Rover has determined that water is available on Mars in the
form of ice.
Help us to design a space craft or Martian habitat that will provide the astronauts
with what they will need to achieve their mission. We are interested in you simply
designing an ecosystem with a usable energy pyramid. We have other engineers
designing propulsion, weapons, etc. We are counting on you and your inventiveness
to help us to solve this problem.
Sincerely
Director of Mars manned flight project
