Lesson 1: Water Cycle

(Monday)
1. Science Water Cycle
2. Fifth Grade
3. 1st Period / 60 minutes
4. Bilingual/Bicultural American Sign Language based
State Goal 1: Describe how water on the Earth changes; condensation,
precipitation, and evaporation.
Cognitive Objective
G1.1 Using information from a lecture and prior knowledge, the student will match
definitions to each step of the cycle whether right or wrong all of the time, scoring a
complete on a check chart.
Affective objective:
M1.2 When working in pairs to match definitions to steps of the cycle, students will
problem solve, working cooperatively, scoring 18 out of 20 or better on a rubric.
Resources/Materials:
-

Computer and Projector

Whiteboards
Dry erase markers
Erasers
Printed out word bank
Pencils

Teaching Strategies/methodologies:
Warm-up: (9:00 AM 9:10 AM)
As the students are getting organized and seated, our morning Prezi Presentation

will be displayed by the projector. Once the students are settled I will begin asking how
their weekend was, what fun things they have done. Then we will complete our daily todos changing the calendar day, discussing the weather, and what we are learning this
week or what we have learned so far. To begin the science lesson, I will introduce the
goal of this weeks lesson.
Good morning students! How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
{comments} Okay, does anyone know what today is? {comments and changes on
board} Great, now who knows what weather we can expect today? {comments
and changes} Okay now this morning we will begin with our science lesson,
before we start, what have we learned thus far? {comments} Great, now this week
we will be learning about the water cycle, does anyone know what this means?
{comments} We will learn about how water changes on Earth. There are different
steps of this cycle we will learn about. This is going to be such a fun lesson I hope
you are prepared! Okay, lets get started!
Instruction: (9:10 AM 9:30 AM)
1. To begin this lesson, I will provide a pre-assessment or critical thinking

questions to check their prior knowledge.

Pre-assessmentHow do you explain the water cycle?
Do you know the steps of the water cycle?
How does water get into the Earths atmosphere? How does
it fall to the Earths surface?
How is water stored and collected on Earth?
What is Condensation?
What is Ground water?
What is Runoff?
What is Evaporation?
What is Transpiration?
What is Precipitation?

2.

I will ask them if they know what condensation, precipitation and evaporation
is. This will lead to my lecturing on what happens during these steps and what
they mean. I will show a diagram and begin discussing with them the places

water travels and how it gets there (the steps of the cycle).
3. Beginning with condensation I will discuss this step and that it means formed
water droplets.
4. I will then go over the step of precipitation and that this means the action of
providing/falling of these water droplets.
5. Finally, I will discuss the act of evaporation, which is the form of liquid to
gas.
Class Activity: (9:30 AM 9:45 AM)
During this activity students will obtain a white board and a word bank that I have given
them. I will hold up a word and or definition and the students will write on the board
what word or definition best fits what I showed the class. They will then hold up their
answer individually. I will after each round discuss the answer and any other questions to
ensure full understanding.

Small Group Discussion: (9:45 AM 9:50 AM)

In pairs students will use the words/steps on their word bank to discuss and write down
examples of where the steps of the cycles take place on Earth. The students will then
present group by group their thoughts and ideas. This is open for discussion without
grading.
Wrap Up: (9:55 AM 10:00 AM)
1. I will ask the students what they learned today.

2. I will then tell them what they can expect tomorrow (visual demonstrations).
3. I will remind the students of the extra practice provided online.
4. I will then close out this lesson with: Great! This was a wonderful lesson, I am
excited to reach our goal and discuss more about The Water Cycle tomorrow!
