Randy: My name is Randy Martinez and this is my daughter;

Pauline: I am Pauline, 11 years old, I am in 6th grade.

Randy: When Pauline was six months old, my wife told me there was a small bump on the left of
her torso, we had her checked. They told us to get her an ultrasound. We got her an ultrasound
and they couldnt find anything.
We went to the emergency room of PCMC. They accepted us there and she got a blood
transfusion. They just kept transfusing blood, they never gave us medicine. We were at PCMC for a
long time, nothing happened until Dra. Padilla came at PGH. She told us theyd get a blood sample
of Pauline from the bone marrow which will be brought to NIH after which will be brought out of the
country. After a few months we found out that Paulines sickness was called Gauchers disease.
When we found out that she had gauchers disease, it took a month to fix the papers so we could
procure medicine. Dra. Padilla called us right away to say that her medicine was approved. The Dr.
told us that instead of PCMC, she will receive treatment at PGH.
It was so difficult. Id go to work at night, and my two children were left with the neighbours. Id
go to work, even without sleep, itd be okay, so as long as I can watch over Pauline. I was in so
much debt when I was working and Pauline was sick. My life was work and the hospital, thats
what happened to me.
We noticed that her stomach was getting smaller and she was getting stronger. Unlike before,
when she didnt have medicine, she wouldn't go out of the house because she would get teased
that she was pregnant.
Pauline: Now I can play more, unlike before, they'd always tease me that I was pregnant, now I can
play more.
Randy: I hope Pauline will continue to receive treatment, and that more people can help her so that
she will be able to consistently be healed. So that she can also finish school.
Pauline: I wish that I will be fully healed and that more medicine will come. I wish that I will also be
able to finish school and become a doctor.
