Dear Area High School Mathematics Student,

The University of Texas at Austins Mathematics Department is proud to announce the
development of a new mathematics building in place of the aged Robert Lee Moore that
currently sits at the corner of Speedway and Dean Keaton. We would not have been able to
fund this endeavor without the help and support of the community here in the city of Austin, so
it only seems fitting that the community has an opportunity to participate in the planning and
design process.
Your task is to submit a design for the building which explores the question: How does
ancient geometry influence architectural designs of modern

buildings? Your design

must exhibit a clear use of two-dimensional mathematical shapes, the drawing must be scaled
and drawn precisely using mathematical tools, and a presentation and final proposal must be
created in the event that a design is chosen as a finalist to be presented to the board of
advisors to the project.
Myself and the committee cannot wait to see your designs. However, use some reason in your
design in terms of size. The current building sits on its own city block and is 17 stories tall. Use these
as guidelines for your design.

Best wishes,
Dr. Alan Reid (Chairman)
