Reflection
As a whole, I have learned a tremendous amount from taking this course, and by doing
the significant learning assignment. In regards to the signature assignment, I was able to not only
learn the ways in which I respond to both positive and negative feedback, but I was also able to
witness and reflect on how my feedback and behavior affected those around me. By simply being
aware of the possibility of feedback being given, I was able to monitor the ways in which I give
feedback leading to a much more productive way of communicating problems.
When going over my assignment there are several key things I learned from the process.
First, I noticed that people are much more likely to respond to negative feedback as apposed to
positive feedback. While people are more likely to except and internalize positive feedback,
negative feedback initiates a larger response in people, either leading to a change in behavior or a
very noticeable stance in their defense. While negative feedback does initially wound an
individual, it provides a better frame of reference in order to immediately correct the behavior.
While positive feedback gives more of a foundation for constructive talk, doing more social
comparison in order to benefit a much longer outcome.
