Solution Assignment 1: (Fall 2016)

PHYSICS (PHY101)
TOTAL MARKS: 25
Due Date: 24/11/2016
Question. No: 1
a) Write your opinion on the following statement.
Is it true or wrong to say that No acceleration means no forces are present?
b) Is it true to say that A projectile has zero acceleration at its peak?
Either yes or explain with reason.
Marks = 5 +5 =10
Solution;
a) No acceleration means no net forces. There can be a balanced set of forces and no
acceleration.
b) No, a projectile has zero y velocity at its peak. Even though it briefly comes to rest in
the vertical dimension, the projectile is always accelerating at -9.80 m/s2 due to the
force of gravity.
Question. No: 2
The coefficient of kinetic frication is 0.25. What is the magnitude of the tension force in the rope
shown in the figure?
Marks = 7

Solution;
Since the surface is horizontal, the amount of normal force equals the weight of the block.
Note that
Variables
Normal force
acceleration
tension

Question. No: 3
A student of Physics applies a constant force of 25Newtons while lifting a heavy Physics book
up into the air a distance of 2.0meters. How much Work does the student do on the book?
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

0joules, because gravity pulled down on the book

5.0joules
50 joules
The answer cannot be found without knowing the mass of the book.
The answer cannot be found without knowing the net Force on the book.

*Write the detail reason of your above selected choice as well.

Solution;
The correct answer is C.
Explanation:

Marks = 4+4 =8

Solution Assignment 1: (Fall 2016)

The work done by a Force is calculated by multiplying the force applied in a direction, and the
distance the objects travels in that direction.
Thus we have
W = Fd
W = (25)*(2)
W = 50J
