Lesson 4 Overview

This lesson took place in the computer lab so that each student had their own computer to
work with. I explained that since the students had some experience with maps, I was going to let
them explore an online map. I modeled some directions of ways they could alter the view they
saw on Google Earth and showed them how to search specific places. I wrote the address of our
school on the board so that the students could find our school, and I challenged them to find their
own house by writing down the students addresses for them to look. The students had some time
to explore Google Earth, and at the end we came back together to discuss what we learned about
maps through this experience.
Objectives

1. The students will be able to use the features of Google Earth to


find their own house.
2. The students will be able to drop a person on a street while they
are looking at Google Earth and explain what they noticed.

Standards

1. 2 G1.0.2 Use maps to describe the spatial organization of the


local community by applying concepts including relative location
and using distance, direction, and scale.
2. 2 G2.0.2 Describe how the local community is part of a larger
region (e.g., county, metropolitan area, state).
Formative: I will walk around while the students are on their
computers to take notes on how they are using the features of
Google Earth.
Summative: I will listen to the students comments about what they
found out about maps using Google Earth.
