Research and Reasoning
Concept 1. Reference materials help us locate information and answer questions.
Evidence outcomes:
a. Identify a variety of resources and the information they might contain (dictionary, trade book, library
databases, Internet web page)
b. Identify a specific question and gather information for purposeful investigation and inquiry
c. Use text features to locate, interpret, and use information (table of contents, illustrations, diagrams,

WIDA Standard:
Standard 2- English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for
academic success in the content area of Language Art
ISTE Standard:
Global Collaborator- Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by
collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.
Content Objective:
Students will use Kiddle to research a holiday to find out how and where it is celebrated and at least 2
other interesting facts about the chosen holiday.
Students will construct a paragraph with their group that includes a topic sentence, at least three details,
and a conclusion that effectively explain the chosen holiday.
Language Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will orally present their chosen holiday to the rest of the class by
reading their paragraph, explaining the most interesting thing they learned about the holiday, and
showing any visuals they found of the holiday using the doc cam.

Key Vocabulary: text, research, tradition, tab, celebration

Supplementary Materials:
Computers
Doc Cam
Paragraph idea organizer- 2 different sheets depending on student needs (attached)
Printer or paper and colored pencils for drawing
Higher Order Questions:
How can I use research to find out information about the topic?
What are the most important facts about the holiday I can share with the class?
What are the best methods of researching this holiday?
Time: 45
Lesson Sequence / Activities
minutesMotivation:
lesson may
I will begin the lesson by addressing that they are starting a new unit about
be split up
exploration. I will explain that one way to learn/explore is by looking for the
into different
answers independently instead of being told. Then I will talk about what Kiddle is
class periods
and ask if they have ever used it to research before.
Presentation:
I will write the language and content objectives on the board in the computer lab
before the lesson. I will have the students wait to log into the computers until I am
done explaining the lesson.
I will read the objectives to the students and explain what the activity will be
about. I will provide a list of holidays the students can choose from to research.
Then I will walk them through logging in to the computers and getting to Kiddle.
Practice and Application:
I will allow as much time as needed for the students to research their holiday. They
will be working in pairs and will be filling out their paragraph planning sheets as
they are working. They can create their topic and conclusion sentence after.
As they are working, I will walk around and help all students who need help. I will
also remind the students that they are focusing on writing details and it isnt
necessary for them to make their paragraph sheets perfect at this stage.
Once the research part is over students will go back to the classroom to construct
their final paragraph. I will be helping each group as much as needed and I will be
making sure that all of the students are participating in their group. The final
paragraph may have to be constructed the next day or during a different time if the
students need more time researching.
When their final paragraph is done, students can draw a picture of something that
represents their holiday.
I will model for students how to use the doc cam before they present.
Review and Assessment:
Students will present their holiday using a doc cam. I will assess students on if
they used their time wisely, if they followed directions, if they completed the
assignment, and how many ideas they included in their paragraphs.
I will be looking for vocabulary in the presentations such as traditions and

celebrations.
The students paragraphs should have a topic sentence, conclusion, 3 details, and
should be generally error free.
Technology- I will walk around and observe the students as they are researching
and ask them questions such as, How did you find this website? and What new
ideas have you found?
Extension:
When the lesson is over, I will bring the class back together and review what a
tradition and celebration is. Then I will talk about using research to find
information and how it is helpful. I will explain to them that this is a helpful tool
that they will use a lot in the future. I will also address the holidays that the
students researched. I will conclude by saying that there are many holidays
celebrated around the word and they are all unique and equally important.

Reflections:
I wasnt sure about teaching this lesson since there are a lot of different components. After I decided
to combine my SIOP and tech lessons I realized how much would go into putting both of them together. I
am overall happy with how this lesson turned out and I think I was able to include many components of
SIOP while including technology into the lesson.
I started teaching the lesson in the computer lab so it took up a little bit of my time I had to teach
the lesson. The students had a lot of energy since they dont get to go to the computer lab regularly. I
wrote the lesson objectives on the board. I went over the content and language objectives, but I realized
they were sort of intertwined in this lesson. I printed out a list of holidays the students could choose from
and I assigned the students a holiday for the sake of time. I introduced the students to Kiddle and I think
it was enjoyable for them to use a kid friendly search engine. They have little experience working with
computers, so I think it was good for them to see that they can do their own research to complete an
assignment. It was a little tricky accommodating to all of the students questions since this was something
that was pretty new to them. I passed out the paragraph sheets out as they began their research so they
could start planning out their lesson. I helped the students with finding details about their holiday. The
students all enjoyed this, but they did get distracted very easily. I was able to guide them through their
research and until all of the students were done planning their paragraphs.
Unfortunately, I didnt have enough time to stay for the rest of the lesson. The students had to go to
lunch and would be finishing their paragraphs and presentations next week. I planned a pretty detailed
lesson, so I wasnt surprised that we ran out of time. I think overall this was a very beneficial lesson for
the students especially since they got to do research independently and they also got paragraph planning
sheets to guide them.
Paragraph Planning SheetsThere is no ELLs in my classroom but there is a few SPED students and students that need extra
accommodations so I created two different planning sheets to help the students:
