Inclusion&Diversity

The Inclusion & Dialogue Center opened as a response to a protest that happened on

the Emory & Henry campus during the Spring semester of 2016, where a group of students
thought that certain parts of Emory & Henrys campus were being exclusive. Soon after
President Jake Schrum authorized a task force to address the issues on campus that were
brought up by the protest. The Inclusion & Dialogue Center is one of the solutions proposed by
that task force. In Josh von Castles words: the college community decided that it wanted the
I.D. center, and since its recent opening, the Inclusion & Dialogue center located in
Scarborough house has seen a great deal of use. Many of the organizations on campus, such
as the Peer Educators and the Gender and Sexualities Alliance use the space for their own
needs. Additionally, the Women and Gender studies faculty use the I.D. center for meetings.

The I.D. Centers facilities include a Library which doubles as a campus Safe Space,

meeting rooms, lounges, and Emory & Henrys only non gendered public bathroom. Every inch
of the I.D. Center is overflowing with history, even the light switch covers are made from reprints
of artwork that relates to gender and sexuality. The main hallway of the I.D. Center also hosts
the Human Family Project where students can write their stories or identities on chalkboards
hung from the walls. The chalkboards are cycled every month by Area Coordinator and Director
of Student Activities Josh von Castle, who manages the I.D. Center.

So far, the I.D. center is making progress towards its goal to create, engage, encourage, and
empower communities inclusive of all.
