Dear Parents,
Fifth Grade Music Students have begun a STOMP music unit. The unit began with
a concept development lesson responding to the question, What is music? and
students completed the following sentence, Music is___________sound. Following
this activity they watched an episode of the CBS Sunday Morning program about
The Junkman Donald Knaack. Ask your Fifth grade student to tell you about this
man and what he does. Students then watched the STOMP Out Loud video to
generate further discussion and spark creativity.
The next step in the project during music class will be to create rhythm patterns to
be performed by the composer on his or her own Junk or STOMP instrument
creation. This is where you come in.
Each student will be responsible for designing and creating his or her own
instrument. These STOMP instruments should be made of items found around your
home such as: left over building or craft items, empty containers you might have in
your recycling bin; etc. Please do not spend any money purchasing items to be
used.
