Lesson Sequence:
Entry Activity/Transition: “Hey guys! Go ahead and bring your bags in, but we’re not going to
take our IPads out just yet. Last week, we reviewed some instruments and took a moment to
learn about different genres and styles of music. Raise your hand and share with me some genres
we learned about!” From there, let kids answer. “Okay, take out your iPads for a little bit. I have
very important instructions for you guys. You will need this for the end of class and the next
music day so pay close attention”.

Activity #1 Objective: Students will download GarageBand on their iPads.

1) Take out your iPads and go to the app store. Search for the app GarageBand. Once you
find it, go ahead and download it. I will pass back papers so we can finish the back side.
When it’s downloading, go ahead and turn off your iPad and take out a pencil. You can
use your iPad as a table if you need to.

Assessment:Students will download GarageBand on their iPads.

Transition: “Alright, I shouldn’t see any iPads on. We are going to switch gears and do a
little bit of compare and contrast.”

Activity #2 Objective: Students will compare and contrast classical and hip-hop music using a
venn diagram.
1) Go back to SparksPage from Lesson #1, and use Venn Diagram on the back of the
worksheet handed back from Lesson #1. Together, we will listen to the classical version
of Brandenburg Suite and then listen to Black Violin. Brandenburg Suite, go ahead and
ask “Is this music you might go home and listen to in your free time? What would you
change about classical music that would make you want to listen to it more?” and then
switch to the Black Violin version “Now, would this be something you might listen to?”
2) When we’re done listening to the music, give the students a moment to write it down.
Then let them do a think, pair, share that way it will give students a chance to write new
answers in their venn diagram.
3) When done, go ahead and transition to introducing Black Violin.

Assessment: Students will compare and contrast the classical and hip-hop version of
Brandenburg Suite using a venn diagram.
Transition: “That group was called Black Violin. During this pandemic, we haven’t been
able to go to any concerts. These guys are so awesome, they provided an online concert
for us to view, so we’ll be doing that here in a little bit.”

Activity #3 Objective: Students will attend a Black Violin Concert virtually and analyze the
different instruments and musical styles being used.
1) “So we discussed different types of genres and we talked about what would happen if we
were to mix up the music to a different genre. We are going to be watching the Black
Violin concert. While you watch, here’s your job…”
2) For kids to remember instructions, go ahead and explain to them the instructions, then
write it on the whiteboard when you ask to recite them. On their sheet of paper that was
handed back, they can write these things anywhere. First task, write down any
instruments and effects being used. Second task, write down something they are enjoying
from the concert. Last, enjoy yourself. At a concert, how would you act if you heard
specific music?
3) Go ahead and give examples of different genres. Jazz=snapping or clapping after a solo.
Classical, listening quietly and clapping when it’s over. Rap concert= like a jazz concert,
you like something or something happens, you react to it like “oooo” or “ayyyy”. Pop or
Hip-Hop Concert you sing along or dance along while maybe “wooing” on parts you like.
For the last part, I want to see everyone react APPROPRIATELY to the music. Move to
the music if they want to.
4) Go ahead and watch Black Violin. Throughout the show, ask them if they recognize any
songs.
5) Watch until it is time to leave. Make sure to leave some time for the kids to discuss what
they liked about the concert.
6) If time allows, go ahead and watch the Q&A video.

Assessment: Students will attend a Black Violin Concert virtually and analyze the
different instruments and musical styles being used.
Transition/Closure: “Thank you guys so much for participating with me today. Next
time I see you, PLEASE bring your IPads. We will be using GarageBand and just like
how we made a song together with Mr.Newlan, you guys will be making your own
completely. I wouldn’t want you guys missing out on something that’s super fun. I’ll see
you guys next time!”
