Are too many people going to college?
As the stage of life stated, During the 2014-15 school year, colleges and universities are
expected to award 1 million associates degrees; 1.8 million bachelors degrees; 821,00 masters
degrees; and 177,500 doctorate degrees (par. 1). With this being stated, Charles Murray is trying
to explain are too many people going to college. In addition, some people learn more on the job
than they ever would in college. With that being stated, some high school students need to go
college for the job he or she wants to do for the rest of their life. Charles Murray, also explains
that students learn most of the information they need in their youth. Students that are going off to
college need to be aware of if they really need to go to college.
First off, Charles Murray is trying to explain whether or not students need to go to
college or not. Charles Murray is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard
University, Harvard College. While he was writing his essay he was thinking about the students
that go to college and the students that dont go to college. He is trying to find of whether or not
too many people are going to college.
Although, college is not always the right path for young adults. This is because some jobs
you dont need a B.A to be good at. For example, some jobs that people can learn more through
experience than through college are farmers, ranchers, construction, city employees, coaches,
and railroad worker. For the student who wants to become a good hotel manager, software
designer, accountant, hospital administrator, farmer, a high-school teacher, social worker,
journalist, optometrist, interior designer, or football coach, four years of class work is ridiculous.
Actually becoming good in those occupations...is acquired on the job(Murray 242). On the

other hand, there are some jobs that people need the college degree. For example, doctor,
counselor, banker, and lawyers. These types of jobs need further education. This is because these
jobs people can not learn all the techniques they need to be successful in their job.
While some people would learn more on the job than they would in college. It is at the
young age most people learn most of their knowledge to live life. Most people learn all they need
to know in elementary through high school, not in college. As Charles Murray explains in his
essay, a lot more than memorization is entailed; yet memorizing things is an indispensable part
of education, too; and memorizing is something that children do much, much better than adults
(236). This just shows that people learn more at their youth than when they are adults.
Students that are going off to college need to be aware of if they really need to go to
college. Charles Murray, explains why people should or shouldnt go to college. Along with that,
there are plenty of jobs that people do not need to go to college for. Although, there are some
jobs that people do need to go to college for. Even though, people learn most of their skills on the
job they learned now to acquire those skills in their youth. Before, you decide whether or not you
want to go to college, think about what you want to do for the rest our your life.
