Name
A Trip to the Grand Canyon
It was hot in the car, but John was not planning to look
at any more sights. He was tired of rivers and didnt need
to see another canyon. When the sweating and waiting
became too much, he got out of the car. His family was
looking at the Grand Canyon.
Seen everything already? asked a park ranger.
John sighed, Ive seen enough. Three rivers and two
canyonsand thats just today.
You know, youre seeing part of the history of Earth,
said the ranger. John was doubtful. The ranger continued,
Each layer of color you see in the Grand Canyon tells a
chapter of our planets story. First, there was a mountain
range here. Then there was an ancient sea. Later came
more mountains, another sea, and some volcanoes.
Millions of years ago, the Colorado River started carving
the rock away, forming the Grand Canyon.
Standing near the edge, John now noticed the layers
and shapes like steps down to the canyon floor. He
imagined the land as the water and weather shaped each
layer. Then as he shook his head and smiled, he thanked
the ranger and joined his family in the distance.
